FISHERS, Ind. -- The 2011-12 season came to an end for the Bowling Green State University women's golf team on Sunday (April 29) as the Falcons shot a 329 in the final round of the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championships.
BGSU's final round was the best of the three it played this weekend at the Hawthorns Golf and Country Club. The team's Sunday score was five shots better than Saturday's 334. When added to the Friday total of 336, the Falcons ended the Championships with a composite 999.
The Falcons tied with Northern Illinois for eighth place, and those two teams battled with Ohio University throughout the day for the seventh through ninth spots in the final standings. Ohio finished with a 993, six shots ahead of BGSU.
The 2012 MAC championship went to Kent State (908). KSU has won the MAC tournament in each of its 14 years. Their 16-stroke margin of victory over Ball State is the third-smallest in those 14 years. Toledo was 19 shots behind the Golden Flashes and finished third.
Individually, Shelby Wilson was the top golfer for the Falcons' in her initial trip to the MAC Championships. Her total of 245 (82-81-82) earned a tie for 28th place.
Wilson finishes the season with a 78.70 scoring average, which ranks fourth ini BGSU history.
Bailey Arnold improved by two strokes in each round and ended the event with a 249 (85-83-81). She finished 34th overall and ends the season with a 79.48 scoring average, which ranks seventh in BGSU history.
Arnold now owns a career scoring average of 79.67 through 43 rounds. With two years to play, she currently ranks second on the BGSU all-time list, just 0.01 strokes ahead of former Falcon Jenny Schnipke (2000-04).
Senior Paula DiFrancesco fittingly ended her Falcon career on a high note. On Sunday, she carded an 80, which was the best round for any BGSU golfer this weekend. For the day, she tied for the 17th-best round. Overall, she shot 253 (87-86-80) for a 35th-place tie.
DiFrancesco ends her final season with an 80.65 scoring average. That total is, by more than four strokes, the best of her career. Her final career tally is an 84.12 average; that mark improved by nearly 1.5 strokes during her final season.
Kelsey Benson also shot a 253 (83-84-86) for BGSU, while freshman Patricia Holt posted a 260 (86-86-88) in her first trip to the MAC Championships.
Jenna Hague (Ball State) and Piyathida Chaiyapan (Toledo) tied for the lead after each scored 223 for the weekend's 54 holes. Hague eventually won medalist honors in a playoff. Mercedes Germino of Kent State finished one shot back, in third place. Three other KSU players tied for fourth.
