BGSU NOTES & STATS | CSU NOTES & STATS
2012-13 BGSU MEDIA GUIDE
QUICK HITS
• Colorado State is the second of three Mountain West Conference opponents the Falcons will face in a span of roughly three weeks ... BGSU posted a 64-54 win over UNLV in Sin City on Sunday (Nov. 25) ... Wyoming will come to Stroh Center to face the Falcons on Sunday, Dec. 16.
• In addition to the three MWC opponents, the Falcons' non-conference schedule includes four opponents from the Atlantic 10 Conference (Temple, Butler, Massachusetts and Dayton); two from the Big Ten Conference (Purdue and Northwestern); and one each from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (Niagara), Big East Conference (Villanova) and Conference USA (UCF) ... BGSU also faced one school (Madonna) from the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference of the NAIA ... all of this, of course, is assuming none of these schools have changed conferences in the last few hours.
• The Falcons are coming off a 70-56 loss to Temple on Wednesday (Nov. 28) at the Stroh Center ... the Owls shot 61.5 percent from the field in the second half to break open a close game ... senior Chrissy Steffen and redshirt junior Alexis Rogers each had 13 points for the home team.
• Wednesday's game was the first-ever double-digit loss for the Falcons at the Stroh Center ... BGSU has a record of 15-3 in the building, now in its second season ... the Falcons' other two losses came by one point apiece, against nationally-ranked Purdue in last season's home opener (53-54; Nov. 17, 2011) and against VCU in the first round of the WNIT (71-72; March 15, 2012).
• Believe it or not, the Temple game marked BGSU's first double-digit loss at home in nearly a decade ... the Falcons' last loss by more than nine points came against Marshall on Feb. 26, 2003 ... BGSU's last double-digit home loss in a non-conference game came nearly 11 years ago, in a 77-52 loss to Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Dec. 8, 2001.
• Since that Marshall game in '03, the Falcons have gone 106-14 at Anderson Arena/Stroh Center ... eight of the home losses in that time came by three points or fewer, with one loss by five points, one by six, one by seven, one by eight and one by nine points.
• The school record for fewest fouls in a game is six (against Michigan on March 2, 1981) ... against Temple, the Falcons were whistled for just four fouls in the first 38-plus minutes, before committing six fouls over the final 1:13.
• Through the first five games of the year, five different players led the team in scoring ... Steffen, fellow seniors Danielle Havel and Allison Papenfuss, junior Jillian Halfhill and sophomore Jasmine Matthews each paced the Falcons in the scoring column once during that span ... against Temple, a sixth player was at the top of the BG scoring list, as Rogers shared that honor with Steffen.

A PAIR OF VAQUERAS
BGSU's Katrina Salinas will see a familiar face at the Stroh Center on Saturday ... Colorado State's Katrina Ottesen, like Salinas, is a junior transfer in her first season at her current school ... and, like Salinas, Ottesen transferred from Central Arizona College ... Ottesen averaged 15.1 points and 2.3 assists per game last year, while Salinas had 10.3 ppg and 4.1 apg as the Vaqueras went 31-3 overall and a perfect 20-0 in league play ... the duo combined to make a total of 137 three-pointers last winter, and both players earned all-conference honors.
ROOS = SUCCESS
• BGSU began the regular-season schedule with a 68-57 win over Madonna on Nov. 10 at the Stroh Center ... four BGSU starters scored in double digits in the win, which was the first official victory of the Jennifer Roos Era ... Roos was hired as the Falcons' head coach on April 16, 2012.
• Roos, of course, has been on the BGSU staff for over a decade, having been Curt Miller's first hire when he took the job in 2001 ... Roos spent three seasons as an assistant coach, and served as Miller's associate head coach for the last eight years ... BGSU captured Mid-American Conference divisional titles in each of those eight years, winning the MAC regular-season title outright in seven of those seasons.
• BGSU has gone 261-95 overall and 135-41 in MAC play since Roos arrived at BG ... those numbers represent a success rate of nearly 74 percent overall and a winning percentage of almost 77% in conference action.
• Over the last nine-plus years, the numbers are even more staggering ... the Falcons are 240-60 (80.0%) overall, 124-20 (86.1%) in MAC regular-season play and 145-24 (85.7%) in all games vs. league foes during that time ... BGSU has won more than 20 games in each of the last nine seasons, a MAC record.
• Although the Madonna game marked the 'official' head-coaching debut for Roos, as well as her first 'official' win, it was not her first regular-season contest in charge of the Falcons ... when Miller suffered a mild stroke in January of 2012, Roos assumed interim head-coaching duties and led BGSU to a 2-0 record, with wins on the road against Central Michigan and at home vs. Northern Illinois prior to Miller's return to the bench in early February.
FALCONS SIGN THREE
Head coach Jennifer Roos announced the signing of three student-athletes during the November signing period ... Kennedy Kirkpatrick (Lawrence, Kansas/Free State H.S.), Rachel Konieczki (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Lutheran H.S.) and Abby Siefker (Ottoville, Ohio/Ottoville H.S.) will be freshmen at BGSU in 2013-14 ... the trio will join Erica Donovan in their first playing seasons for the Falcons next fall ... Donovan, who played one year at North Carolina State University, is sitting out the '12-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
• The Falcons enter the Colorado State game with a record of 3-3 on the young season ... BGSU opened the 2012-13 campaign with a 68-57 win over Madonna at the Stroh Center (Nov. 10), then hit the road and posted a 79-74 victory at Niagara (Nov. 15) ... BG then suffered back-to-back losses at Purdue (45-59; Nov. 19) and against Villanova, with the latter setback coming by a 53-42 score on Saturday (Nov. 24) in Las Vegas ... the Brown and Orange bounced back with a 64-54 win over host UNLV on Sunday (Nov. 25), before falling to Temple, 70-56, on Wednesday night (Nov. 28) at the Stroh.
• Senior Chrissy Steffen paces the Falcons in scoring, with 12.3 points per game to date ... she has 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game, and leads the Brown and Orange with 11 successful three-point field goals this season.
• Junior Jillian Halfhill and fifth-year senior Danielle Havel are averaging 9.5 and 9.2 ppg, respectively ... the two are tied for the team assists lead, with 2.0 apg apiece ... • Senior Allison Papenfuss has 4.2 ppg and 4.0 rpg, while freshmen Bailey Cairnduff and Miriam Justinger have 3.7 and 3.5 ppg, respectively ... Justinger is a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line, while Cairnduff has made five three-pointers to tie for fourth on the Falcons.
• Juniors Jill Stein and Katrina Salinas have scored 3.2 and 2.7 ppg to date ... Stein averages 4.7 rebounds per contest, while Salinas has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.0 ... sophomore Deborah Hoekstra played in both of the games in Vegas, and averaged 1.5 ppg.
• Halfhill, Havel and Steffen each have started all six games to date, while Rogers has made five starts ... Cairnduff started the first four games of the season, while Matthews has been in the starting lineup in each of the last two contests.
• Head coach Jennifer Roos welcomed back nine letterwinners, including four starters, from a year ago ... the Brown and Orange went 24-7 overall and 14-2 in the MAC in 2011-12 ... two of those starters, Steffen and Rogers, were selected to the Preseason All-MAC Team in 2012-13 ... Steffen led the Falcons in scoring last season, with 13.2 points per game, and also averaged 5.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.8 steals.
• Rogers averaged 12.3 points and a team-leading 8.7 rebounds per game, and was named to the All-MAC First Team in her first playing season with the Falcons (Steffen earned All-MAC Second-Team honors last year) ... Rogers also was a WBCA Coaches' All-America Team honorable-mention selection in '11-12.
• Rogers was a 2012-13 Preseason All-MAC First-Team selection by the College Sports Madness web site, while Steffen was a preseason all-league second-team choice.
• In addition to Rogers and Steffen, Havel returns after starting all 31 games a year ago ... Havel averaged 6.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.6 steals and a team-high 0.7 blocked shots ... Matthews is back after making 21 starts as a freshman ... Matthews, who averaged 7.0 points per game as a freshman, hit 51 three-point field goals, the second-highest total on the team last winter.
• Halfhill returns after playing in all 31 games last year, starting the first 10 ... she averaged 4.3 ppg a year ago ... the other returnees include seniors Hoekstra, Papenfuss, Stein and senior Simone Eli.
• Four newcomers joined the program this season ... one of those four, Erica Donovan, will sit out the season after transferring from North Carolina State Univ. ... she played in all 35 games for the Wolfpack a year ago, averaging 4.9 points and 2.5 rebounds per game ... Donovan, who graduated from John Jay H.S. in Northside, Texas, attended Notre Dame Academy in Toledo as a freshman.
• Salinas also joined BGSU as a transfer, as she came to Northwest Ohio after two years at Central Arizona College ... Salinas averaged 10.3 points and 4.1 assists last year, and helped the Vaqueras to a 20-0 league record and a 10th consecutive appearance in the NJCAA national tournament.
• Freshmen Cairnduff (Morley, Mich.) and Justinger (Sylvania, Ohio) joined the Falcons this season after each earned first-team all-state honors last year ... Cairnduff finished her career at Morley Stanwood H.S. as the school's all-time leading scorer, helping the Mohawks to state titles in both volleyball and basketball last year ... Justinger helped Northview H.S. to a 21-2 record last season, averaging 19.6 points per game to lead the Northern Lakes League in scoring.
• The Falcons are shooting just .353 from the field, and BG is .307 from three-point range and .705 from the free-throw line through the first six games ... the opponents have shot .418 from the floor, .311 from beyond the arc and .720 from the stripe ... the Falcons have a rebounding margin of +3.7.
THEY'RE FREE, YOU KNOW
If the first six games are any indication, the 2012-13 Falcons are continuing an impressive program trend of getting to the line waaaaay more often than the other team ... BGSU has made a total of 79 free throws this season to date ... that total is just three fewer than the opponents have attempted ... BG has made more tosses than the foes have attempted in three of the last four years ... and, the Falcons' total of free throws made has been at least 100 higher than the opponents' FTM total in each of the last seven seasons ... the 2002-03 season was the last time the opposition made, or attempted, more free throws than BG.
THE CAPTAINS
Fifth-year senior Danielle Havel, senior Chrissy Steffen and junior Jill Stein are the tri-captains of the 2012-13 Falcons ... Havel and Steffen each are captains for the second consecutive year ... the three were selected in a vote of team members as well as the coaching staff.
A QUICK LOOK AT COLORADO STATE
Colorado State is 2-3 on the year ... the Rams split four home games to open the season, and suffered a 69-52 loss on Wednesday night (Nov. 28) in the team's road opener against Loyola Marymount ... CSU's wins came over Northern Colorado and Seattle, and the Rams lost to Montana State and Toledo by a total of nine points ... sophomore forward Kara Spotton leads the team in scoring, averaging 9.0 points per game ... the Rams have no players averaging double digits in the scoring column, but a total of seven players have at least six points per game ... Spotton paces CSU in rebounding, with 6.8 rpg, while sophomore guard LaDeyah Forte has 8.2 ppg and a team-leading 4.6 assists per outing ... first-year coach Ryun Williams inherited eight letterwinners, including three starters, from the 2011-12 team ... last year, the Rams went 13-17 overall and 9-5 in Mountain West Conference play.
THE SERIES
BGSU leads Colorado State, 1-0, in the all-time series between the schools ... the only prior meeting came last season, with the Falcons picking up a 70-57 victory at CSU's Moby Arena on New Year's Eve (Dec. 31, 2011) ... Chrissy Steffen fueled a Falcon first-half flurry, and helped her teammates fight off each CSU comeback attempt in the second half ... Steffen had a then career-high 25 points, adding seven rebounds, four assists and three steals ... the Falcons went 10-of-30 from three-point range, and held the Rams without a triple (0-of-6) ... Sam Martin and Meghan Heimstra each had 12 points for the hosts.
YOU ARE NOW FREE TO MOVE ABOUT THE COUNTRY
The Falcons spent a good portion of the last two weeks riding planes, trains and automobiles (well, planes and busses, at least) ... beginning with the bus trip to Niagara, the Falcons logged over 5,000 miles of travel (5,080, to be exact) in a 12-day span ... in addition to the NU trip, the Falcons headed to Purdue for a Nov. 19 game, and BGSU went to Las Vegas, Nev., on Thanksgiving Day for a pair of contests in the Lady Rebel Round-Up ... that mileage total doesn't include trips to and from the hotel(s) to the arena(s), bus trips to and from the airport in Vegas, or numerous coffee runs for the seniors as well as the elder members of the travel party.
STROH'ME-COURT ADVANTAGE
• The Falcons have enjoyed a long-standing tradition of success at home ... most of that success came at venerable Anderson Arena, where the Brown and Orange enjoyed an outstanding home-court advantage over the years ... but, BGSU appears to be beginning a new tradition of success at the Stroh Center.
• BGSU's has a record of 15-3 in the new building since it opened prior to last season ... after losing by just one point to nationally-ranked Purdue in last year's home opener, the Falcons reeled off 14-straight wins at the Stroh, before losing another one-point game to VCU in the WNIT ... BG suffered a 70-56 loss to visiting Temple on Wednesday night (Nov. 28).
• The 15-3 mark at the Stroh comes after the Falcons went 333-116 (74.2%) in Anderson Arena during the team's tenure there ... the record was even better during MAC play, as the Falcons had a league mark of 192-54 (78.0%) at "The House That Roars" through the years.
ANDERSON + STROH = SUCCESS
• BGSU ended the Anderson Arena Era on a pretty good run, to say the least ... the Falcons won 46 of the final 48 games played in "The House That Roars" ... BGSU saw a 23-game home winning streak snapped with a one-point loss to Toledo (Jan. 26, 2011), then won the final four games in the building by an average of 18.5 points per game.
• The Falcons' only other loss in the final 48 contests in the old barn came at the hands of Indiana in the third round of the 2009 WNIT ... BG had won 19-straight home games before losing to IU, then starting the 23-game home streak ... 41 of the Falcons' 46 wins in that overall span came by double digits.
• When combining the Anderson Arena Era with the inaugural year-plus of the Stroh Center, the Falcons have won 61 of the last 66 home games ... 54 of those 61 victories, including 13 of the 15 wins at the Stroh, have come by double-digit margins.
