BGSU NOTES & STATS - PDF
QUICK HITS
• The Falcons opened the road portion of the 2012-13 schedule with a 79-74 win at Niagara University on Thursday night (Nov. 15) ... senior tri-captain Chrissy Steffen led the way with a career-high 28 points, as the Falcons built a double-digit lead before holding off a late charge by the Purple Eagles ... BGSU went 29-of-37 from the free-throw line in the win, with junior Jillian Halfhill making 10 of her 12 tosses to set career bests in both categories ... Halfhill had 14 points on the night.
• BGSU's 2-0 start is the Falcons' first in five years ... the 2007-08 team won the first six games of the season en route to a 26-8 overall mark and the fourth of the team's eight-straight national postseason berths ... three of the Falcons' six regular-season losses that season came to teams from the state of Indiana, as BG lost at home to nationally-ranked Notre Dame in double-overtime, and on the road against Indiana and Ball State.
• The Falcons have an all-time record of just 4-30 against nationally-ranked teams ... one of those wins came against Purdue, as the Falcons opened the 1991-92 season with a 75-72 win over the Boilermakers at venerable Anderson Arena ... BG has faced Purdue three other times when the Boilermakers have been ranked, including last season, when PU posted a narrow 54-53 win in the first-ever women's basketball regular-season game at the Stroh Center.
• BGSU's most recent trip to Mackey Arena saw the Falcons face a team other than the Boilermakers ... the Falcons faced UCLA in West Lafayette in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Championships, with the Bruins posting a 74-61 victory (March 19, 2006) ... that marked the first game in BG women's hoops history in which both participating teams were ranked in the top 25.
• BGSU has two Indiana natives on the roster, and both are senior captains on the 2012-13 squad ... fifth-year senior Danielle Havel and Steffen, a fourth-year Falcon, both hail from Carmel, Ind. ... they teamed up to help Carmel H.S. to a state title in 2007-08, when Havel was a senior and Steffen a junior ... Havel played a year at DePaul University before transferring to BGSU.
• BGSU began the regular-season schedule with a 68-57 win over Madonna on Nov. 10 at the Stroh Center ... four BGSU starters scored in double digits in the win, which was the first official victory of the Jennifer Roos Era ... Roos was hired as the Falcons' head coach on April 16, 2012.
• Roos, of course, has been on the BGSU staff for over a decade, having been Curt Miller's first hire when he took the job in 2001 ... Roos spent three seasons as an assistant coach, and served as Miller's associate head coach for the last eight years ... BGSU captured Mid-American Conference divisional titles in each of those eight years, winning the MAC regular-season title outright in seven of those seasons.
• BGSU has gone 260-92 overall and 135-41 in MAC play since Roos arrived at BG ... those numbers represent a success rate of nearly 74 percent overall and a winning percentage of almost 77% in conference action.
• Over the last nine-plus years, the numbers are even more staggering ... the Falcons are 239-57 (80.7%) overall, 124-20 (86.1%) in MAC regular-season play and 145-24 (85.7%) in all games vs. league foes during that time ... BGSU has won more than 20 games in each of the last nine seasons, a MAC record.
• Although the Madonna game marked the 'official' head-coaching debut for Roos, as well as her first 'official' win, it was not her first regular-season contest in charge of the Falcons ... when Miller suffered a mild stroke in January of 2012, Roos assumed interim head-coaching duties and led BGSU to a 2-0 record, with wins on the road against Central Michigan and at home vs. Northern Illinois prior to Miller's return to the bench in early February.
• The Falcons have outrebounded the opponent in each of the first two games, and BG has a rebounding margin of +10.5 on the young season ... the Falcons had a 41-27 margin on the boards against Madonna, and pulled down 42 rebounds to Niagara's 35 on Thursday night in Western New York.

Steffen's previous career scoring best was 27 points in last season's Mid-American Conference opener, vs. Kent State at the Stroh Center (Jan. 4, 2012).
ABOUT THE FALCONS
• The Falcons enter the Purdue game with a record of 2-0 on the young season ... BGSU opened the 2012-13 campaign with a 68-57 win over Madonna at the Stroh Center (Nov. 10), then hit the road and posted a 79-74 victory at Niagara on Thursday night (Nov. 15) ... four players scored in double digits in the Madonna game, which marked the first 'official' victory for head coach Jennifer Roos.
• Roos welcomed back nine letterwinners, including four starters, from a year ago ... the Brown and Orange went 24-7 overall and 14-2 in the MAC in 2011-12 ... two of those starters, senior Chrissy Steffen and redshirt junior Alexis Rogers, were selected to the Preseason All-MAC Team in 2012-13 ... Rogers also was a WBCA Coaches' All-America Team honorable-mention selection in '11-12.
• Rogers was a 2012-13 Preseason All-MAC First-Team selection by the College Sports Madness web site, while Steffen was a preseason all-league second-team choice.

• Four newcomers join the roster this season ... one of those four, Erica Donovan, will sit out the season after transferring from North Carolina State Univ. ... she played in all 35 games for the Wolfpack a year ago, averaging 4.9 points and 2.5 rebounds per game ... Donovan, who graduated from John Jay H.S. in Northside, Texas, attended Notre Dame Academy in Toledo as a freshman.
• Another transfer joins the Falcons, as Katrina Salinas comes to BGSU after two years at Central Arizona College ... Salinas averaged 10.3 points and 4.1 assists last year, and helped the Vaqueras to a 20-0 league record and a 10th consecutive appearance in the NJCAA national tournament.
• Freshmen Bailey Cairnduff (Morley, Mich.) and Miriam Justinger (Sylvania, Ohio) join the Falcons this season after each earned first-team all-state honors last year ... Cairnduff finished her career at Morley Stanwood H.S. as the school's all-time leading scorer, helping the Mohawks to state titles in both volleyball and basketball last year ... Justinger helped Northview H.S. to a 21-2 record last season, averaging 19.6 points per game to lead the Northern Lakes League in scoring.
• Steffen leads the Falcons in scoring through two games this season ... her 19.5 points-per-game average includes a career-high 28 points at Niagara ... she also has 3.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game, and is tied for the team lead in each of the latter two categories.

• The Falcons are shooting .413 from the field, .308 from three-point range and .738 from the free-throw line through the first two games ... the opponents have shot .419 from the floor, .310 from beyond the arc and .690 from the stripe ... the Falcons have a rebounding margin of +10.5.
THE CAPTAINS
Fifth-year senior Danielle Havel, senior Chrissy Steffen and junior Jill Stein are the tri-captains of the 2012-13 Falcons ... Havel and Steffen each are captains for the second consecutive year ... the three were selected in a vote of team members as well as the coaching staff.
ON THE BG BENCH
Jennifer Roos moved one office down the hall and one seat down the bench this year, taking over the head-coaching job ... Roos, who begins her 12th overall season with the Falcons, and director of operations Monique Rosati (now in her sixth season with the program) are the lone holdovers from last year's staff ... they are joined by three newcomers ...
• Jesse Fleming came to BGSU from Stony Brook, where he spent the 2011-12 season ... prior to that, Fleming was on the coaching staff at his alma mater, Saint Bonaventure, for six years ... he was associate head coach during his final season (2010-11) with the Bonnies.
• Ali Mann, one of the greatest players in program history, returns to the program after spending the 2011-12 season as an assistant coach at Colgate ... her collegiate coaching experience also includes over two years as an assistant at IPFW ... additionally, she played professionally in Luxembourg and Portugal, and also coached her club's U19 team in Portugal.
• Emily London joined the BGSU staff after spending the previous five years at Samford University, the first four as a player ... she is the school's all-time scoring leader, and also set program records for games started, three-point field goals made and free throws made ... London worked in the SU athletics department last season.
A QUICK LOOK AT PURDUE
Purdue, like BGSU, is 2-0 on the season ... the Boilermakers posted a lopsided 82-47 win over USC Upstate in the season opener, then went on the road to defeat SIU Edwardsville, 66-51, Saturday night (Nov. 17) ... coach Sharon Versyp has received balanced scoring from her team in the early going, with four players averaging between 10.5 and 13.0 points per game to date ... Drey Mingo and Courtney Moses lead the way, averaging 13.0 ppg apiece ... Purdue is currently ranked 14th in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' poll, and the Boilermakers are 18th in the most recent Associated Press poll ... Purdue was picked to finish third in the Big Ten Conference this season, with Moses named to the preseason all-league team ... last season, the Boilermakers went 25-9 overall and 11-5 in the Big Ten ... Purdue tied for second in the conference, then won the league tourney and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships ... eight letterwinners returned from last year's club.
THE SERIES
BGSU trails Purdue, 4-3, in the all-time series between the schools, and the Boilermakers have won the last two meetings ... last season, the teams played a thriller in the first-ever women's basketball regular-season game at the Stroh Center (Nov. 17, 2011) ... Courtney Moses hit a layup with just 13.5 seconds remaining to lift Purdue to the win ... a three-point try in the dying seconds was just off the mark for the Falcons, and a Purdue player batted the ball toward midcourt ... BG rebounded the ball, but time expired before the Falcons could get another shot off ... the Falcons are 2-2 at home and 1-2 on the road against PU ... last season's meeting was the teams' first in nearly two decades ... the Falcons' last road game against Purdue saw the Boilermakers pull out an 81-78 decision on Dec. 21, 1992 ... the previous year (Nov. 23, 1991), the Falcons downed a Purdue team that was ranked #8 in the Associated Press poll, with a 75-72 win at Anderson Arena in Jaci Clark's first game at BGSU head coach.
YOU ARE NOW FREE TO MOVE ABOUT THE COUNTRY
If travel is a good way to foster team bonding, the Falcons should be pretty well bonded in about two weeks ... beginning with last Wednesday's bus trip to Niagara, the Falcons will log over 5,000 miles of travel (5,080, to be exact) in a 12-day span ... in addition to the NU trip, the Falcons head to Purdue for a Monday (Nov. 19) game, then fly to Las Vegas, Nev., on Thanksgiving for a pair of contests in the Lady Rebel Round-Up ... that mileage total doesn't include trips to and from the hotel(s) to the arena(s), bus trips to and from the airport for the Vegas trip, or numerous coffee runs for the seniors as well as the elder members of the travel party.
LAST TIME OUT
Senior Chrissy Steffen scored a career-high 28 points and the Falcons held off a charging Niagara club down the stretch, posting a 79-74 victory Thursday night (Nov. 15) in Western New York ... Steffen made 10 of her 15 shots form the field, and scored 17 of her points in the first half ... 11 of those points came in the first five-plus minutes, as BG surged to a 24-8 lead ... the Purple Eagles would respond, cutting the lead to as few as five points in the first half ... the Falcons extended the lead to 12 points in the second period, but NU whittled that lead down to three points in the final minute ... but, the Brown and Orange salted the game away at the free-throw line, going 7-of-9 from the stripe in the final minute of play ... for the game, BGSU made 29 free throws in 37 tries .. junior Jillian Halfhill scored 14 points on the night, and was 10-of-12 from the stripe.
THESE NEW KIDS ARE THREE-MENDOUS
Freshman Bailey Cairnduff hit a game-high three three-point field goals in her collegiate debut vs. Madonna ... freshman Miriam Justinger and junior Katrina Salinas each hit a three off the bench in Saturday's game, meaning that newcomers accounted for five of the Falcons' six three-pointers made ... Justinger and Cairnduff each hit another triple in the win at Niagara ... on the year, the three newcomers have combined for seven of BGSU's 12 treys.
