After demolishing the field at the Butler Fall Invite the Bowling Green State University women's golf team etched its name into Falcon history on more than one occasion.
Win tournament, check. Accomplish something that has not been done in 20 years, check. Establish new school record, check.
The Falcons won the Cleveland State Invitational back on Sept. 25 with a team score of 630. Combined with this week's win the Falcons joined select company. The only other BGSU team to win back-to-back tournaments were the Falcons of 1992 that actually won three straight invitationals during the fall season.
The win was also head coach Stephanie Young's fifth of her career, becoming BGSU's all-time winningest coach.
BGSU began play on Tuesday with a five shot lead over three different teams, but shot 300 on day two, eight shots better than any of the other 10 teams in the field. The Falcons finished with a 36-hole score of 600, smashing the school record for 36-holes by nine shots. The previous record was 609, establish at the 2010 Great Smokies Intercollegiate.
Bradley finished second (613), followed by IUPUI (617), Indiana State (622) and Eastern Illinois (629) to round out the top five. BGSU was the lone representative from the Mid-American Conference.
The only thing the Falcons did not accomplish was to have one of the five players earn medalist honors, but having three finish in the top-five and the entire team finish in the top-10 will have to do. Bailey Arnold, Patricia Holt and Shelby Wilson all finished in a tie for fourth with a 36-hole score of 151.
Arnold opened the tournament with a disappointing 80, but fired the second-lowest round of her career, a 71, on day two. Holt was the most consistent of the trio, carding 74-77 in the two-day event, The 74 is the lowest round of her career, while the 77 would have matched her career-low, if not for the 74 in round one. Wilson opened with a career-best 71, but struggled on day two with an 80.
Amy Ruthenberg had one of the most impressive tournaments of her career, finishing ninth with a score of 153. She shot 75 on day two, combined with her 78 on Monday.
Rounding out the Falcons' lineup was freshman Lily Bartell's 154. She carded a pair of 77's to finish in a tie for 10th.
BGSU will return to action on Oct. 15 in Nashport, Ohio for "The Preview", hosted by Ohio University.
