Heyboer, Stander score vs. Falcons for second-straight season
Three-time All-American Laura Heyboer scored midway through the first half, giving host Michigan State University the lead for good as the Spartans downed the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, 2-0, Friday afternoon (Sept. 9). The non-conference match was held at MSU's DeMartin Stadium at Old College Field.

With the win, the Spartans improve to 5-1-0 on the season. MSU, after a season-opening loss, has posted five-straight shutout victories. The Falcons drop to 1-5-0 on the year.
Olivia Stander also scored for the home team. Both Heyboer and Stander also scored in MSU's win over the Falcons last season, a 2-0 decision at Cochrane Field.
On Friday, Heyboer opened the scoring at the 21:01 mark, converting a feed by Stander. Stander doubled the Spartans' lead with 55:06 gone, assisted by Kelsey Mullen.
Courtney Clem earned the shutout for the Spartans, making a total of three saves. Redshirt junior Becca Ison had a total of nine saves for the Falcons.
"This was a much better, disciplined performance than we have had," said Falcon coach Andy Richards. "Organizationally in the defense, I felt we were much better than in any of our previous games. And, we grew in confidence, ironically, as the game went on. I thought we got better and better."
MSU had a 22-5 advantage in shot attempts on the afternoon, including an 11-0 margin in the first half. The Spartans were credited with 11 shots on goal to the Falcons' three.
"We conceded two great goals from two exceptional players," said Richards. "The second one was a shot that I don't think even I would have stopped in my heyday.
At the offensive end of the pitch, freshman Ashley Garr had two of BGSU's five total shots, coming just over a minute apart early in the second period. One of those shots was on net. Fellow freshman Sidney Huth and sophomore Tracy Togba each had a shot on goal as well
"Overall, I was pleased with the competitive spirit and the fight that we showed today," said Richards. "We got a lot of bodies on the field, and some people proved a point for us today, which we are extremely happy about.
"But, at the end of the day, we know that we still lost a game, and we've got to get better. We have to return on Sunday and see if we can get a result against Youngstown, but we also know that we played a good opponent today and acquitted ourselves well."
BGSU, as mentioned, is in action again Sunday (Sept. 11), heading cross-state for a match against Youngstown State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Stambaugh Stadium.
FALCON NOTES
* The Falcons' starting lineup on Friday included four freshmen, one redshirt freshman, two sophomores, a redshirt soph, one junior, a redshirt junior and one senior ... it marked the first time this season that four true frosh were in the starting eleven for coach Andy Richards.
* Two players were in the starting lineup for the first time in their collegiate careers ... freshman Ashley Garr and sophomore Ivi Casagrande each made their initial start at BGSU.
* Redshirt freshman Amanda Nelson and true freshman Lindsey Thompson saw the first playing time of their collegiate careers ... Nelson, a native of Overland Park, Kansas, missed all of last season due to injury ... she entered the MSU match at the 83:31 mark ... Thompson played the final two-plus minutes of the second half for her first game action as a Falcon.
* In all, a total of 23 players saw action for the Falcons on Friday afternoon.
* Michigan State now leads BGSU, 13-1-2, in the all-time series between the teams ... MSU is BGSU's most common non-conference opponent, with a regular-season meeting in each of the Falcons' 15 years as a program, plus a matchup in the 2005 NCAA Championships.
* The Falcons probably will not be too sad to see Laura Heyboer graduate from MSU ... Heyboer, who has earned All-America honors in each of her first three seasons, has scored at least two points in each of her four games vs. BGSU ... Heyboer had two assists in a 3-0 Spartan win during her freshman season of 2008, then had a goal and an assist in a 4-0 victory in 2009 ... last fall, as was the case on Friday, Heyboer scored the opening goal in MSU's win ... in her four years, she had nine points on three goals and three assists vs. the Falcons.
