The Bowling Green State University tennis team closed the non-conference portion of the schedule by gutting out a 4-3 win over Duquesne University Friday night (March 19). The match was held at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 10-3 on the year, and head coach Penny Dean's team has won four consecutive matches. The Dukes, who had defeated nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina in their previous match, dropped to 5-7 overall.
Five of the six singles matches required three sets, and the sixth -- senior Katia Babina's win at the second flight -- was a close contest as well. Babina downed DU's Rachel McGowan by identical 7-5 scores.
BGSU had won the doubles point by sweeping all three matches, taking an early 1-0 lead in the match. Junior Christine Chiricosta and freshman Maddy Eccleston won by an 8-5 result at the top flight, while Babina teamed up with freshman Jade Johnson for an 8-4 victory at flight number two.
In third-flight doubles action, senior Samantha Kintzel and freshman Katie Grubb lost only two matches in their victory against Tara Majdalani and Ana Mungo.
In singles play, the Falcons won in each of the top-three flights, while DU picked up wins at flights four through six, respectively. Chiricosta downed Mungo in top-flight action, while Kintzel rallied after dropping her opening set by a 6-0 score. The senior co-captain bounced back to win the next two sets over Samantha Noble in the third-flight match.
"Obviously, it was an extremely close match," said Dean. "Duquesne is a very good team, and this was a good victory and a good way for us to end our non-conference schedule."
The Falcons begin Mid-American Conference play next weekend, with matches at Ball State and defending champion Miami. BGSU's MAC home opener comes on April 2 vs. Western Michigan.
