Bowling Green, Ohio – Five players scored in double figures and the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team blew open a game that was competitive for the first 15 minutes in an 81-55 victory over Ohio Dominican Monday night. It was the team's 19th consecutive home opener victory and marked the final time the team will ever play a home opener in Anderson Arena.
Bowling Green will make its home in the new Stroh Center next year but Anderson Arena got one final home opener this year. The team played the last of its 51 home openers in The House That Roars and finishes with a record of 46-5 in such games in the building. BGSU is 84-12 in home openers in the history of the program.
The Falcons got things going with a 16-3 run to end the first half that turned a three-point deficit into a 41-31 halftime lead. Ohio Dominican made just one field goal over that final 4:25 of the first half and the Falcons were 7-for-9 from the floor. The final bucket came on a Scott Thomas putback with two seconds left.
Ohio Dominican made one last push to pull the upset to start the second half, getting a John Trew three-pointer and a Morgan Jones jumper to make it 41-36 early. But the Falcons used a 29-2 run over the next nine minutes to put the game away.
Bowling Green's defense turned up the pressure during that stretch, holding the Panthers to 1-for-14 shooting and recording seven steals. When Dee Brown scored a fastbreak lay-up with 9:28 to play, Bowling Green had built a 70-38 lead and were in control.
Ohio Dominican committed 23 turnovers on the night and many of those were forced by Bowling Green as the Falcons had 16 steals, the most since the team also had 16 on Nov. 11, 2006 against Denison. The Falcons, on the other hand, had just eight turnovers and held a 30-5 edge in points off turnovers.
Bowling Green also pounded the paint, scoring 36 points inside and the Falcons had a 14-6 edge in second chance points by picking up 15 offensive rebounds.
Senior Joe Jakubowski, who came off the bench for the first time since he was a freshman, tied for the team-high with 12 points and added eight assists without a turnover. He also had three steals and a pair of rebounds with a perfect shooting night of 5-for-5 from the field and 2-for-2 from three-point range.
McElroy was the other Bowling Green player with 12 points, while Thomas, Jordon Crawford, and A'uston Calhoun had 11 points each. Freshman Cameron Black just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Bowling Green shot 44 percent from the field and made 7-of-16 three-pointers. The Falcons held Ohio Dominican to 40 percent shooting.
Ohio Dominican falls to 0-2 on the season and Bowling Green improves to 1-1. The Falcons will head on the road to play at Michigan Thursday at 7 p.m. That game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
