MAC STANDINGS THROUGH FRIDAY'S MATCHES - PDF
With the win, the Broncos improve to 8-6-3 overall and 4-2-3 in MAC play. The Falcons drop to 4-10-4 and 2-4-3, respectively.
The loss, combined with Friday's other outcomes around the MAC (click on the above PDF for MAC scores and updated standings), dropped the Falcons into fourth place in the East Division and ninth place overall. The top eight teams will qualify for the MAC Tournament. BGSU currently trails eighth-place Akron by a single point (teams earn three points for a win and one for a tie).
The winning play in Friday's match came after a WMU free kick from approximately 35 yards out. The Broncos' Caitlin Henderson played a cross into the box, and Matula headed it into the right corner of the net at the 106:15 mark. Henderson drew the lone assist on the play.
The Broncos held a 22-8 advantage in shot attempts. After BGSU outshot the hosts by a 7-6 count before halftime, Western had 16 shots to the Falcons' one in the second half and the OT periods.
The Broncos had a narrow 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. Julia Francy made four saves in goal to earn the shutout for the hosts. For the Falcons, fifth-year senior Alexa Arsenault made five stops in her complete-match effort.
"It was a heartbreaker," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "Again today, we played very hard and we persevered. The stats will tell you they had more shots, but I think we had more quality opportunities. We had three or four in the first half alone that we were disappointed not to put away. That would have changed the face of the game.
"We played well defensively, but in the end we were undone by a very good free kick that got served into the danger area. No one took care of it, and it glanced off one of their heads and went in. It's disheartening, heartbreaking -- all of those adjectives.
"But, in truth, we only have ourselves to blame, because we had the chances to put the game away early. We had some great opportunities to score, and we didn't take them. If you don't take advantage of those opportunities, it can come back and bite you.
"Now, we are under quite a bit of pressure, as we have only two games left in the regular season to get some results. And, that it what we will aim to do, beginning on Sunday."
BGSU remains on the road, heading to DeKalb, Ill., for that Sunday (Oct. 24) game, against Northern Illinois University. The Falcons then return home to close regular-season play against Miami University on Thursday (Oct. 28).
FALCON NOTES
* Western's goal ended a shutout streak of 260:15 for Alexa Arsenault, the 10th-longest such streak in school history ... after allowing a goal midway through the second half of last Friday's (Oct. 15) tie with Akron, Arsenault blanked Ohio through 110 minutes on Sunday (Oct. 17), then had 106:15 of shutout work before the Broncos finally scored on Friday.
* Friday marked the fourth consecutive overtime game for the Falcons, a new school record ... BGSU twice had streaks of three-straight OT contests, with both prior streaks coming late in the 2007 season.
* Friday was just the second road overtime loss in the history of the program ... BGSU now has an all-time record of 18-16-30 in OT matches, including a 9-12-13 record at Cochrane Field, a 7-2-15 mark in road games and a 2-2-2 ledger in neutral-site overtime matches.
* Freshman Kaitlyn Tobin made her third start of the season, and her first since the match at Niagara on Sept. 3.
* The BGSU starting lineup included all four of the team's seniors, along with two juniors, one sophomore and four freshmen.
