YPSILANTI, Mich. - Carlos Medlock scored 26 points, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point land, to lead Eastern Michigan University to a 78-68 victory over the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team Wednesday night (Feb. 13). The Mid-American Conference game was held at EMU's Convocation Center.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 9-14 overall and 5-6 in the MAC. BGSU drops to 11-12 and 6-5 respectively.
Redshirt freshman Chris Knight had 15 points to lead three double-digit scorers for the visiting Falcons. Juniors Brian Moten and Nate Miller added 14 and 13, respectively.
The Eagles made 10-of-19 three-point tries on the night, and held a 35-24 rebounding advantage. Eastern went to the free-throw line 37 times, making 32 (86.5 percent), while the Falcons were 11-for-17 from the stripe.
The early stages of the game featured three ties and three lead changes. The Falcons took an early lead on a Joe Jakubowski three-point play, as the freshman took a pass from Miller and scored with just over a minute gone.
The Eagles responded with four consecutive free throws, but Knight hit a layup, then split a pair of free throws out of the game's first media timeout.
Moten drilled a right-side three-pointer off Knight's pass at the 15:19 mark, and Jakubowski lobbed a pass to Knight for a turnaround layup and an 11-6 lead. But, the Eagles then would go on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good.
Medlock began that run with a triple, then hit another trey two minutes later to give the Eagles the lead at 14-11 and prompt a Falcon timeout. Out of that break, however, a BG turnover led to a Tyler Jones layup.
Sophomore Otis Polk swooped in from the left side and took Miller's pass for an impressive tomahawk dunk, and Miller's jumper brought BG within 16-15 midway through the half. But, Jarred Axon scored Eastern's next five points, sandwiched around a Polk layup, and a Zane Gay tri-lighter gave the Eagles a 24-17 lead. at the 7:21 mark.
The Falcons cut the deficit to four points on several occasions late in the half, on a Marc Larson layup with 1:42 left and again on Moten's transition, shot-fake layup in traffic with only 16 seconds remaining. But, Medlock drove the lane, drew defenders to him and fed Justin Dobbins for a layup just before the buzzer. The hosts led by a 34-28 count at the intermission.
In that first half, the Eagles outrebounded the Falcons by a 19-11 count. Nine of Eastern's boards came at the offensive end.
In the second half, the teams combined to score on four-straight possessions in the early going. Dobbins' layup was answered by a Miller jumper, and Medlock's jumper was followed by Knight's left-side J. After an EMU offensive foul, BG's next possession resulted in two Miller free throws.
Polk split a pair of free throws, and Eastern's lead was down to three points, at 38-35. The Falcons got the EMU lead down to three points two more times -- on three-pointers by junior Darryl Clements and Moten -- in the next few minutes. But, on each of the three occasions, Eastern came right back with triples to double the lead.
Two free throws by Polk put the Brown and Orange within a 50-45 score at the 12:07 mark, but EMU went on a 7-2 run to take a 10-point lead, capped by Medlock's long-distance shot at 10:35.
Clements got an offensive rebound and hit a driving layup, and Miller's entry pass found Knight for a turnaround layup. Gay split a pair of tosses, but two Clements FTs were followed by Moten's left-side triple, and BG was within two points, 58-56, with 6:45 on the clock.
The Falcons forced an EMU turnover, but BG gave the ball right back. Eastern missed two shots on the next possession, but the Falcons missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity with 5:21 remaining.
On the next possession, Larson blocked a Dobbins layup try, but Dobbins got his own rebound, drew a foul and hit both free throws with 5:01 remaining. After a BG turnover, Medlock split a pair of tosses, and a steal by Jesse Bunkley led to a Dobbins dunk and a 63-56 EMU advantage.
The Falcons got back within five points on two occasions, the last on Polk's offensive rebound and layup at the 2:36 mark. But, after an Eastern timeout, Medlock hit a back-breaking triple, giving the hosts an eight-point lead with under two minutes remaining, and the Falcons could not recover.
Dobbins had 11 points and Bunkley 10 for the Eagles, while Clements and Polk scored nine points apiece for the Falcons. Polk was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and 3-of-4 from the line.
Moten made a season-high four three-pointers, tying his career best.
The announced attendance of 479 was the lowest to see the Falcons play this season. The second-lowest attendance this season for a BG game was 659, for the Illinois State game during a blizzard in mid-December.
The Falcons have completed play against the MAC West Division's six teams, and return to intra-divisional action for the remainder of the conference regular season. BGSU will host the University of Akron on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 16), beginning at 2:00 p.m. at venerable Anderson Arena.
