SOUTH BEND, Ind. - After spotting Notre Dame an early 3-0 advantage Friday night in the Joyce Center, the Bowling Green State University hockey team climbed to within one, before the Irish got a late third period goal for a 4-2 Falcon loss.
BGSU (2-6-1, 2-4-1) got put behind the eight ball early in the first period after UND's Matt Awada skated in from the left circle and fired a shot off the glove of senior Jon Horrell just 20 seconds into the game.
Notre Dame extended the lead to 2-0 late in the first period after Josh Sciba scored is fourth goal of the weekend at the 15:07 mark.
The Irish offensive outburst continued just 2:05 into the second after Awada scored his second goal of the night. Awada's goal was the lone goal of the second period.
But that is where things began to change.
Bowling Green came out with a fire to start the third period. Senior Mike Falk scored just 33 seconds in the period. With the puck bouncing around in between several sticks, somehow the puck found its' way onto Falk's blade, who did the rest.
Falk continued the BGSU comeback 12 minutes later on a 5-on-3 power play. With five forwards on the ice, sophomore Jonathan Matsumoto won the face-off straight back to fellow sophomore Alex Foster, who slid the puck across ice to Falk, who fired a one-timer past UND's goaltender David Brown.
But that was all the Falcon offense could muster. The Irish scored the final goal of the game after a BGSU turnover allowed UND's Tim Wallace to skate in uncontested and flip the puck over Jon Horrell's right pad.
Despite the 4-2 loss BGSU did outshoot the Irish 38-22 on the night. Bowling Green was 1-for-9 on the power play, while Notre Dame was only 1-for-8 with the man advantage.
Up next for the Falcons is a pair of home contests versus Northern Michigan (Nov. 18-19) at 7:05.
