
Falcons Upset North Carolina

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team used season-bests on bars, floor and vault to post a 195.125-194.425 victory over the University of North Carolina Saturday night at the Eppler Complex. With an all-around score of 39.425, Melissa Popovich led all performers.
Celebrating back-to-back Gymnast of the Week performances, Popovich recorded a new personal-best for the third consecutive week in the all-around with that 39.425, the second-best BGSU score in school history. Marny Oestreng owns the top mark of 39.600.
The Falcons opened the meet with a season-best 48.775 on the vault, led by Popovich with a 9.875. Senior Pia Sjovall scored a 9.775 and sophomore Erin McCollam posted a 9.725.
The Orange & Brown continued the impressive showing on bars, where the Falcons collected a 48.775, with the help of 9.850's by Popovich and Marie-Eve Boisvert.
Despite two falls on beam, the Falcons were still able to compile a 48.475 as a team. Junior Kristin DiPietro led all Falcons with a 9.825, while co-captains Popovich and Sjovall recorded 9.800's.
With a 49.100 on floor, the Falcons were able to seal the victory. Popovich and Sjovall once again led BGSU with a 9.900 and 9.875 respectively.
The Falcons return to action Friday night (Feb. 6) with a trip to Ball State for a 7:00 p.m. showdown, before returning home on Sunday (Feb. 8) for the All-Ohio Championships at 2:00 p.m. held inside Anderson Arena.
