AUBURN, Ala. - Pam Brown's jumper in the lane broke a 73-all tie with 1:05 left, and propelled the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team to an 80-76 win over Charleston Southern University Friday (Nov. 24). The win puts the Falcons into the championship game of the Kroger Classic, where the Brown and Orange will face nationally-ranked Auburn University.
Junior Francine Miller had a game-high 23 points to lead five Falcons in double figures, and she added 11 rebounds for her 11th career double-double.
Senior Angie Farmer had 17 points, including a game-high five three-point field goals, while Brown, a redshirt freshman, had 12 points and 12 rebounds. Brown's totals represent career highs in both categories, and the double-double was the first of her brief collegiate career.
Dana Western added 11 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Emily Pohl had her first double-digit scoring game with 10 points. Pohl made some key free throws in the late moments, going 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in the game's final 30 seconds.
Another freshman, Kelly Kapferer, had nine rebounds.
After Brown canned her jumper, the Falcons took a four-point lead on a pair of Pohl free throws. Then, the next time the Lady Buccaneers came down the court, BG's Miller blocked a shot and grabbed the rebound herself. Sophomore Kim Griech was fouled seconds later, and made one of her two charity tosses.
On the ensuing possession, Griech recorded the first block of her career. Pohl grabbed the rebound, was fouled and converted two free throws to give BGSU a seven-point lead. CSU hit a three-pointer with just two seconds left to provide the final margin.
The Falcons held a 31-18 advantage in rebounds in the second half, and outboarded the Lady Buccaneers by a 55-46 margin for the game. Ten of those BG caroms came at the offensive end, with Brown and Kapferer grabbing five apiece.
Miller had three blocked shots as the Falcons had six as a team.
BG hit 11 three-point field goals, marking the first time this season that the Falcons hit double digits in that category. BG made at least 10 treys on 12 occasions last season, en route to setting the NCAA record with 9.25 successful triples per game.
BGSU has advanced to the championship game of an in-season tournament for the first time since the 1992-93 season. That year, the Falcons advanced to the championship of the Boilermaker Classic before losing by three points to host Purdue. BGSU has not won an in-season tourney since capturing the Illini Classic during the 1988-89 campaign. It should be noted, though, that the Falcons have won the Mid-American Conference Tournament four times during that stretch.
The Falcons, now 2-1 on the season, will face host AU in Saturday's championship game, with starting time set for 3:00 p.m. locally (4:00 p.m. Eastern). Auburn was ranked 18th and 20th, respectively, in the latest ESPN/USA Today and Associated Press polls.
With the loss to BGSU, Charleston Southern drops to 1-1 on the season. Erin Jedlikowski led the Lady Buccaneers with 17 points, while Eboni Littlejohn had 16 off the bench.
Auburn (3-0) defeated IUPUI, 70-55, in the first game Friday. IUPUI will meet CSU at 1:00 p.m. Saturday (2:00 p.m. Eastern) in the consolation contest.
