BLACKSBURG, VA. - Despite five players scoring in double digits, the BGSU women's basketball dropped a 78-70 decision to Hampton University in the consolation game of the Hokie Hardwood Classic. The Falcons finished fourth in the tournament, hosted by Virginia Tech.
The Brown and Orange led by as many as 12 points late in the first half, after back-to-back three-pointers by freshman Kim Griech. BGSU still led by seven points at the intermission before Hampton came battling back.
The Lady Pirates scored 12 of the first 17 points of the second half to tie the game at 39-all. That marked the first of eight deadlocks in the half.
Neither team led by more than three points until a Francine Miller jumper gave BG a 65-61 margin with 5:33 remaining in the game. That was BG's final basket until just eight seconds remained in the contest.
With the margin still at four points (67-63) with five minutes left, HU proceeded to score the next 13 points. An Angie Farmer three-pointer with eight seconds remaining was all the Falcons could muster.
HU converted 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute to salt away the victory.
Miller, who was BGSU's lone representative to the all-tournament team, had her second-straight double-double, and her fourth of the year, with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Miller tied her career best in the rebounding department.
Afra Smith and Farmer each had 15 points to pace the Brown and Orange, while Griech joined Miller with 12 points. For both Smith and Griech, the scoring totals represented season highs.
Sherry Kahle had 10 points and eight rebounds, while Jaymee Wappes tied her career high with 11 assists.
Hampton's LaShondra Dixon had a game-high 28 points, while three teammates hit double digits in rebounding as the Lady Pirates held a commanding 56-39 advantage on the boards.
