18 Questions with Lily Bartell
March 26, 2014 | Women's Golf
This spring season, the BGSU Athletic Communications office, along with both the men's and women's golf teams, will bring you a segment called "18 questions with" each week. This week's 18 questions are with sophomore Lily Bartell.
1. What is your hometown?
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
2. What is your favorite movie?
It's always hard to choose only one, but I'll go with Hello Dolly. I love old movies!
3. What is the most played song now on your IPOD?
"Moneyball" by Jennifer Nettles
Â
4. What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to blog, write, spend time with friends and family, and get outside to play sports, walk, run, bike, or go to the beach (when I'm home).
Â
5. Where is your favorite place to hang out at in BG?
I enjoy spending time in the Union because I can eat, get coffee, study, shop at the bookstore, and meet up with friends. It's a great spot in the center of campus where I can be productive, but also have fun.
Â
6. If you could have any superpower, what would you choose?
I would choose the power to fly.
Â
7. When did you first start playing golf?
I've been around golf for my entire life, but I started playing competitively at age 7.
Â
8. Who got you started playing golf?
Both my mom and dad play golf and my dad is a golf course architect, so having golf in my life was inevitable. My dad sawed off a 7-iron and putter for me and would take me out to the golf course to hit balls.
Â
9. What has been your favorite course to play?
I used to live in Arizona and I love desert courses, so I'd have to say my favorite would be Sunridge Canyon in Fountain Hills, Ariz.
Â
10. What is the toughest place you have ever played at?
Secession Golf Club in Beaufort, S.C.
Â
Â
11. What is your routine or ritual prior to playing a round of golf?
I like to eat a meal with pasta or rice the night before a round and the day of a round I hit balls first, mark my golf balls with neon orange Sharpie, then practice putting while listening to music.
Â
12. What is the best advice you've ever received?
Last year, Coach told us the quote, "Comparison is the thief of joy," which has been the ultimate frame for my life the past two years. I've realized that I can't compare myself to other people, other teams, or compare any of my successes or failures.
Â
13. Who is your favorite golfer?
Phil Mickelson. Who doesn't love the lefty?
Â
14. Why did you choose to attend BGSU?
I knew I wanted to play collegiate golf and during my recruiting period I came up for a visit, met the team, met Coach, and I was signed within about 4 weeks. I knew it was where I wanted to be and the team seemed like a great group of girls. Coach was also a big component in my decision to come to BG. She had an infectious positive attitude and seemed to have big goals and plans to achieve those goals.
Â
15. What is your major of study?
Print Journalism with a minor in Communication.
Â
16. What has been your favorite class at BGSU?
Although it doesn't have a great deal to do with my major, I'm currently in an Economics class that I really enjoy. The professor is really excited about teaching and the material is something new and interesting.
Â
17. What do you want to do after you graduate?
I plan to work at a fashion or home magazine in their editorial department.
Â
18. What is your favorite golf memory at BGSU?
Our team recently traveled to Florida for the Women's MAC Match Play Challenge and on the third day I had a very tight match going. The match went all the way to the 18th hole and we were tied. I sunk a 30-foot putt to win the match with my team, other MAC teams, and coaches watching and cheering me on. It was an absolutely amazing feeling.
