BGSU Women's Soccer - 2025 MAC Tournament Scenarios & Tiebreakers
October 28, 2025 | Women's Soccer
BGSU'S MAC TOURNAMENT SCENARIOS
OVERVIEW
• BGSU enters the final day of the regular season in a tie for sixth place in the 13-team league. The Falcons and Eastern Michigan each have 1.45 points per game (the league is utilizing PPG rather than points due to teams playing a different number of matches).
• The Falcons play at Massachusetts on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m., while EMU plays at Central Michigan that afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
THE TIEBREAKERS...
• If BGSU and EMU wind up deadlocked in the final regular-season standings, the tiebreakers are as follows (info at the bottom of the page as well)...
• The first tiebreaker is head-to-head competition. BGSU and EMU played to a 1-1 draw in their regular-season meeting.
• The second tiebreaker is goal differential in MAC matches. Currently, BGSU has a +5 goal differential while EMU has a +3 differential.
• The third tiebreaker is goals allowed in MAC matches. Currently, BGSU has allowed seven goals and EMU has allowed eight.
• The fourth tiebreaker is goals scored in MAC games. BGSU has scored 12 and EMU has scored 11 to date.
WHAT ABOUT BALL STATE?
• There is a chance that BGSU, EMU and Ball State could all end the season tied for fifth, in the event of wins by BG and EMU and a loss by BSU (the Cardinals play at Northern Illinois). But, in that scenario, BSU would win a three-team tiebreaker.
• The Cardinals beat both the Falcons and Eagles by 1-0 scores. BSU has a 2-0-0 record in the head-to-head meetings, with BGSU and EMU both at 0-1-1.
• So, the tiebreaker would revert to a two-team tiebreaker between BGSU and EMU.
ENOUGH WITH YOUR TECHNICAL MUMBO-JUMBO, JUST GIVE IT TO ME STRAIGHT...
• IF BGSU WINS AT UMASS: The Falcons qualify for the tournament if EMU ties or loses at CMU. Even if EMU wins, the Falcons win the tiebreaker unless EMU wins by a more lopsided margin than BGSU (for example, if BG wins by a 1-0 score, EMU would need to win by a 4-0 score).
• IF BGSU TIES AT UMASS: The Falcons still qualify for the tournament if EMU ties or loses at CMU. In the event of an EMU draw, the Falcons would advance via the second tiebreaker, as BG's goal differential would still be +5 and EMU's differential would be +3.
• In the event of a BGSU draw, EMU would qualify for the tournament with a win over CMU.
• IF BGSU LOSES AT UMASS: The Falcons still could qualify for the tournament if EMU loses at CMU, depending on the margins of each team's losses. For example, if BGSU loses by one goal, the Falcons still advance if EMU loses by one goal.
• In the event of a BGSU loss, EMU would qualify for the tournament with a win or a draw at CMU.
WHEN WILL WE KNOW?
• While BGSU's game at UMass begins at 1:00 p.m., all of the other games around the MAC begin at 3:00 p.m. So, regardless of BG's outcome against the Minutewomen, the Falcons will not know their MAC Tournament fate until approximately 5:00 p.m. ET.

 TIEBREAKER PROCEDURE ...
TIEBREAKER PROCEDURE ...
Ties in the conference standings will be broken as follows...
Two Team Tiebreaker:
1) Head-to-head competition
2) Goal differential (all conference games)
3) Goals allowed (all conference games)
4) Goals scored (all conference games)
5) Point accumulation (Top Six (6) Teams) vs. highest seeded teams
6) RPI Rankings (final regular season)
Multiple (Three or more) Team Tiebreaker:
1) Combined head-to-head record among the tied teams
2) If or when two teams remain tied, the Two Team Tiebreaker goes into effect.
• Note: If a three-team tie is reduced to two teams, the two-team tiebreaker goes into effect.
• Winning percentage is used instead of record because of situations where teams do not play each other the same number of times. (a team that is 1-0 [1.000] would win the tiebreaker over a team that is 1-1 [.500].
• If the combined records of each tied team are different, the tiebreak is complete. (Example: If Team A is 2-1, Team B is 1-1 and Team C is 1- 2 then this is the order of the tiebreak.
• Once only two teams remain tied, the two-team tiebreaker is used.
