Bowling Green Battles Ball State To 3-1 Final In Stroh Saturday

Lauryn Hovey Records Third Double-Double
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team wrapped up the weekend against Ball State on Saturday (Oct. 7) at the Stroh Center. The Falcons were able to force the match into a fourth set, taking the third set 25-21, but Ball State was able to hold on for a 3-1 final score. The Falcons were paced by Lauryn Hovey's double-double, landing a team-high 17 kills to go along with 17 assists. Lindsey LaPinta led the defense with a career-high 17 digs. The Falcons will now hit the road, traveling to face the Ohio Bobcats next weekend.

How It Happened
Set 1: Ball State 25, Bowling Green 21
- Ball State opened the match with a 3-0 run with a 6-0 run soon to follow to increase their lead to 10-3 in the early going.
- Bowling Green quickly answered with a 4-0 run of their own to trim the lead to 10-7.
- A 3-0 run for Ball State pushed their lead to 15-9, bringing with it the media timeout. They recorded two more points out of the timeout to make it a 5-0 stretch with a 17-9 lead.
- A 4-1 stretch for BGSU chipped away at the Ball State advantage, cutting the lead down to 18-13.
- The Falcons continued the chip away, this time with a 3-0 run to trim the lead down to 19-16 and force a Ball State timeout.
- The Falcons and Cardinals traded points through the end of the set with Ball State claiming a 25-21 score.
Set 2: Ball State 25, Bowling Green 20
- The second set began with the trading of points before a 3-0 burst for the Cardinals granted BSU a 5-2 early lead.
- The Falcons responded with a 4-0 run to swing the score in their favor, 6-5, starting a trend of ties in the set, lasting until 11-11.
- A 3-0 spurt for the Orange and Brown pushed the Falcons in front at 13-11, breaking the trend of ties.
- Ball State answered with a 4-0 run to reclaim the lead at 15-13 and bring about the media timeout of the set.
- The two teams continued to go back-and-forth until a BGSU timeout paused the action with Ball State leading 22-18.
- The Cardinals were able to keep momentum, taking a 25-20 set score to go up 2-0 in the match.
Set 3: Bowling Green 25, Ball State 21
- The two teams traded runs in the early going of the third set before a 3-0 Ball State run pushed them in front 9-7 to force a Bowling Green timeout.
- The Falcons were able to knot it up at 11-11, but a 3-0 Ball State run put them in front 15-12.
- BGSU answered with a 4-0 run to move in front 16-15 and force a Ball State timeout. The run stretched to 5-0 with a Bowling Green point out of the timeout.
- The lead for the Falcons expanded to 22-19 to prompt the second timeout of the set from the Ball State bench.
- The Falcons were able to maintain their advantage, taking the set 25-21 to force a fourth.
Set 4: Ball State 25, Bowling Green 21
- The fourth set began back-and-forth before a Bowling Green timeout paused the action with Ball State's lead at 10-7.
- Out of the timeout, BGSU put together a 5-0 run to move in front with the score at 12-10. Another 3-0 Bowling Green run soon followed to push the lead to 16-12 with a Ball State timeout.
- Ball State regrouped after the timeout, using a 3-0 run to trim the lead down to 18-17 BGSU with the Falcons taking a timeout, their final of the set.
- The Cardinals landed the next point out of the timeout to knot the score up at 18-18, but a pair of BGSU points pushed the Falcons back in front at 20-18.
- Ball State responded with a 6-0 run to take the lead at 24-20. The Falcons were able to land a point, but BSU took the set 25-21.

- After recording a triple-double on Friday (Oct. 6), Lauryn Hovey followed it up with a double-double against Ball State. Hovey recorded a team-high 17 kills and matched her season-high for assists with 17. Hovey filled the stat line with seven digs, three blocks and an ace.
- Lindsey LaPinta led the Falcons in digs with 17, setting a new career-high for her time with Bowling Green.
- Helen Wilford made her BGSU debut, coming in during the second set. Wilford tallied four kills for the Falcons to go along with a .500 hitting percentage. On the defensive side she registered four block assists.
