BGSU hits triple digits in a conference game for the first time in arena history
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team achieved a Stroh Center first on Wednesday night (Jan. 11). The Falcons downed Central Michigan University, 101-68, in Mid-American Conference action.
Wednesday's win marked the first time the Falcons (13-2, 2-1 MAC) have hit triple digits vs. a MAC opponent in arena history. Seven different BGSU players scored at least nine points in the win, with five hitting double figures.
Elissa Brett shook off some first-half foul trouble to score a team-leading 18 points, while Allison Day had 17, Morgan Sharps 13, Sophie Dziekan 12 and Nyla Hampton 10.
Jocelyn Tate and Amy Velasco added nine points apiece for the Orange and Brown.
Sydney Harris had a game-high 23 points to pace three double-digit scorers for the Chippewas (3-11, 1-2 MAC). Bridget Utberg added 13 and Karrington Gordon 10.
The Falcons led by five points early in the second period before back-to-back buckets by Day began a 22-2 run. Sharps drilled a three-pointer with 3:02 left in the half to give the hosts a 52-27 lead.
Then, in the third quarter, Brett hit four triples in a five-possession span, including treys on three consecutive trips down the floor. The last two were both from the corner in front of the BGSU bench, giving her team a 65-35 advantage and sending her teammates into a frenzy.
That lead reached a game-high 38 points on several occasions midway through the final period.
BGSU shot 54.2 percent from the field for the game, and the Falcons went 13-of-27 (48.1%) from the arc. BG committed fewer turnovers than the opponent for the 15th time in as many games this season to date, and had a 23-6 advantage in points off turnovers on Wednesday night.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT: BASKETBALL 101
• BGSU reached the 100-point mark against a Mid-American Conference opponent for the first time in Stroh Center history. The building opened prior to the 2011-12 season.
• The Falcons scored 101 points in the program's 101st MAC regular-season game in the venue.
A FEW MORE TRIPLE-DIGIT FACTS
• BGSU scored at least 100 points in a game for the 28th time in program history.
• The Falcons hit the century mark in a MAC regular-season game for the 17th time.
• BG has reached 100 points in a game three times this season to date (vs. Wright State and at Southern Indiana). It marks the first time since the 1993-94 season that the Falcons have had three 100-point contests.
• The Falcons have hit the 100-point mark twice in the first six home games this season, having scored 102 points vs. Wright State in the home opener (Nov. 14, 2022). BGSU had not posted two 100-point games at home since the 1992-93 campaign.
• Wednesday was the first time the Falcons scored 100 points against a MAC team since a 106-105 win at Ball State on Jan. 6, 1999. That game required four overtimes.
• Wednesday marked the first time BG hung 100 on a MAC opponent in regulation in 25 years (plus eight days), since a 102-69 victory over Western Michigan at venerable Anderson Arena on Jan. 3 1998.
THROW OUT THE RECORD BOOK
• Entering the 2022-23 season, the Stroh Center record for most points in a women's basketball game was 100. The record for most field goals made? 38.
• After six home games, the Falcons have surpassed the 100-point mark not once, but twice. BGSU had 102 points vs. Wright State in the home opener, before scoring 101 vs. CMU on Wednesday.
• Believe it or not, the Falcons have surpassed the old FGM record THREE times in those six games. BG hit 41 field goals vs. Wright State, made 40 more against Findlay and hit 39 shots against the Chippewas.
FIRST QUARTER
• The Chippewas held the lead several times in the game's opening minutes, as Sydney Harris hit a pair of three-pointers on back-to-back possessions. The latter triple came after a long-range make by Elissa Brett, giving the visitors an 8-5 lead.
• Allison Day knocked down a right-wing jumper, which began a 9-0 run for the Orange and Brown. A baby hook by Day gave BG a 9-8 lead, and Sophie Dziekan's reverse layup capped the run and put the hosts ahead by six points at the evening's first media timeout.
• CMU scored six of the next seven points, with Karrington Gordon's layup cutting the Falcons' lead to 15-14, but BG countered with another Day jumper and a driving layup by Jocelyn Tate. After a pair of Tate free throws, Day kicked the ball out to Morgan Sharps for a three-pointer and a 24-16 lead with just over one minute left in the period.
• After the visitors scored four-straight points, Day hit another hook shot in the final second of the quarter for a 26-20 lead.
SECOND QUARTER
• Nyla Hampton's reverse layup early in the quarter gave BGSU an eight-point lead, and after Harris countered with a three, Day hit an around-the-world banker to give BG a 32-25 advantage with just over eight minutes left in the half.
• Day's shot began a 7-0 run for the Falcons. She hit another layup after an offensive rebound by Tate, and Amy Velasco fed Lexi Fleming for a three-pointer and a 37-25 lead.
• Gordon's putback ended that run, so the Falcons went on another one. BG scored the game's next 15 points. Dziekan found Tate for a reverse layup, and Hampton then got her fingertips on a CMU pass, grabbed the ball, drove to the other end of the floor and went behind the back for a layup and a 41-27 lead as the Chippewas used a timeout.
• A Fleming steal led to a Sharps banker, and Hampton grabbed a defensive rebound and went coast-to-coast for a pull-up jumper. Hampton's nifty pass resulted in a Dziekan layup, and Fleming stole the ball at midcourt and got the ball to Hampton for a transition bucket. When Tate spotted Sharps for a triple, the lead was 52-27.
• CMU had four turnovers in the period, and the Falcons scored nine points off of those turnovers.
THIRD QUARTER
• Brett picked up a pair of first-half fouls, scoring three points prior to halftime. But, she heated up in a big way in the third quarter. After Bridget Utberg opened the second-half scoring with a three-point play that cut the BG lead to 53-32, Brett took a Fleming pass and knocked down a three-pointer from the right wing.
• BG missed a pair of shots on the next possession, but forced a CMU miss before Brett connected from the left corner, again after receiving a Fleming feed. The Chippewas used a timeout.
• Harris scored from the arc out of that timeout, but Brett headed to the right corner and knocked down a three-pointer. BG forced another CMU miss, and a Tate offensive board led to another Brett trey, also from the right corner. The Falcons' lead was 30, at 65-35, with 6:08 left in the period.
• Velasco found Sharps for a three-pointer before driving and hitting an and-one layup. Velasco's free throw made it a 71-40 game, and Dziekan went right around her would-be defender for a layup.
• Then, Dziekan put back a teammate's miss on back-to-back possessions, and Day's foul-line jumper beat the buzzer and gave BG a 79-48 lead after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Triples from Velasco and Brett helped the Falcons open up an 85-50 lead, and after Rochelle Norris scored in the paint, another Velasco trey put BG ahead by 36.
• A turnaround jumper by Sharps was followed by a driving layup from Olivia Hill, and BG had a 92-54 lead midway through the period. Dziekan scored inside, and Payton Moore scored two-straight BG buckets.
• Emily Siesel's pass resulted in a Jasmine Fearne three-ball in the game's final minute, putting the Falcons over the 100-point mark.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• BG had seven players score at least nine points in the win, with Brett scoring 18 and Day 17.
• Sharps had 13 points and Dziekan 12, with Dziekan adding a game-high seven rebounds. Dziekan tied her career scoring high and fell just one rebound shy of matching that career mark.
• Hampton had 10 points with Tate and Velasco scoring nine apiece.
• Lexi Fleming had a game- and career-high five assists, and tied for game honors with four steals. Hampton also had four steals as BG had 12 as a team.

• BGSU shot 54.2% from the field, while CMU shot 41.7%. The Falcons had a decisive 43-26 rebounding advantage in the win.
• Day had 10 points in the first quarter, going 5-for-6 from the floor during that time.
• Hampton nearly matched the entire CMU team in second-quarter scoring. She had eight points on 4-for-4 shooting as BG outscored the Chippewas, 27-9, in the period.
• Brett scored 12 points in the third period, going a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range.
• The Falcons went 4-for-6 from long distance as a team in the fourth quarter, with Velasco making both of her triple tries in that period.
• Day scored 15 first-half points, with Brett recording 15 points (on 5-for-5 shooting from the arc) in the second half.
