BGSU Volleyball Concludes Non-Conference Schedule With Loss To Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball program concluded the non-conference portion of the 2022 schedule by taking on the University of Michigan on Sunday (Sept. 18). The Wolverines topped the Falcons in straight sets for a 3-0 final. The loss moves BGSU to 5-6 on the season heading into Mid-American Conference play this upcoming weekend.
The Falcons had the toughest non-conference schedule in the MAC, according to average RPI ranking for opponents. Bowling Green tallied wins over Tennessee, Northern Kentucky, DePaul, American and Mississippi State during the non-conference slate. First up on the MAC schedule will be two matches with the Kent State Golden Flashes.

How It Happened
Set 1: Michigan 25, Bowling Green 17
- The first set began with the teams trading points early on. The first back-to-back points came from Michigan to push ahead 4-3, but the Falcons quickly restarted the cycle with a 4-4 tie.
- Michigan created and held a lead that the Falcons worked to narrow, but a 3-0 run by the Wolverines pushed them ahead 14-10 in the first set, resulting in BGSU taking the first timeout of the match.
- BGSU tallied the first point of the timeout, but Michigan resumed their run, this time stretching to 4-0 before another Bowling Green timeout with the score at 18-11.
- Out of the timeout the Falcons saw a 4-1 burst to cut into the lead, 19-15.
- After the burst for Bowling Green, Michigan used a 3-0 run to push the lead to 22-15.
- The Orange and Brown responded with two points, but a 3-0 run to close the set gave Michigan a 25-17 first set win to go up 1-0 in the match.
Set 2: Michigan 25, Bowling Green 20
- The second set began similarly to the first with the two teams trading points, seeing ties deep into the set. However, a 3-0 run for the Falcons pushed BGSU ahead 14-12 before Michigan responded with a 4-0 run to take a 17-15 lead and prompt a Bowling Green timeout. The run extended to 6-0 for the Wolverines with a 19-15 advantage.
- Later in the set, BGSU called a timeout during a 3-0 Michigan run, trailing 23-17.
- The Falcons tallied a 3-0 run soon after the timeout, but Michigan held on for a 25-20 second set score.
Set 3: Michigan 25, Bowling Green 22
- For the third straight set, ties were consistent early with the score at 5-5, but a 4-0 Michigan run forced a timeout from the Bowling Green bench trailing 9-5.
- Later in the set, a 3-0 run by Michigan pushed the Wolverines' lead to 16-10.
- The Falcons came battling back with a 4-0 run to narrow the gap to an 18-17 lead for Michigan with the Wolverines calling timeout.
- Michigan was able to rebuild their lead to 22-18 with a 4-1 stretch before Bowling Green called timeout.

- In the first set, Katelyn Meyer subbed in for the Falcons. With her first attack attempt of the match she became the program's all-time leader in attack attempts with 4,482 and counting. Meyer ended the match with 20 kills, bringing her career total to 4,501 attack attempts.
- Lauryn Hovey tallied the first solo block of her collegiate career in the match to go along with a block assist as well. Hovey now has 21 total blocks this season.
