Four Falcons score 10 points apiece in Vegas opener
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team utilized a balanced attack along with several scoring runs to take control Sunday afternoon (Dec. 19), as the Falcons topped Oakland University, 72-60. The game, part of the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic, was held at South Point Arena.
The Falcons (4-4) have won three consecutive games, all by double-digit margins, after a 1-4 start to the season.
BGSU trailed by five points in the first few minutes, but went on a 13-1 run to take the lead for good. Another run in the second quarter extended the lead to double figures, and after the Golden Grizzlies (4-6) crept within nine points midway through the third period, the Orange and Brown went on a 13-2 surge to take a 20-point advantage.
BG's lead was 18 points with under two minutes to go, before OU scored the game's last six points, including a three-pointer as the final horn sounded to provide the final 12-point margin.
Kahlaijah Dean had nearly half of her team's points, with a game-high 28 for the Golden Grizzlies. She was 10-of-17 from the field, while her teammates combined to go 9-of-43.
By contrast, the Falcons had four players score exactly 10 points apiece, with two others scoring at least eight. The 10-point quartet included Elissa Brett, Nyla Hampton, Kadie Hempfling and Zoe Miller. Morgan Sharps and Jocelyn Tate added nine and eight points, respectively.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"Tonight was a great team win. I loved the effort from our whole team, and I thought our defensive effort – especially in the first half – was very good tonight."
Â
FIRST QUARTER
• The Golden Grizzlies took an early lead. After Kenzie Lewis opened the scoring with a bucket, Oakland scored the next six points. Amy Velasco hit a floater, but Alona Blackwell banked home a three-point try to give the Grizzlies a 9-4 lead.
• But, Nyla Hampton put back her own miss, then hit Morgan Sharps for a corner three that tied the game. Out of the media timeout, Zoe Miller scored off of a nifty post move, then knocked down a pair of free-throw tries.
• Hampton picked the pocket of Breanna Perry, took a pass from Kadie Hempfling and converted a pull-up jumper. Then, Hampton dished the ball to Velasco for a layup and a seven-point lead. BGSU's 13-1 run came to an end as Kahlaijah Dean hit a driving layup in the final seconds to cut the Falcons' lead to 17-12.
SECOND QUARTER
• The Grizzlies got within one point with just over a minute gone, before Lewis drove the baseline and scored. Perry hit a shot in the paint, but Sharps immediately answered with a three-pointer from the right side.
• After Dean's layup cut the BG lead in half, Sharps drove and dished the ball to Sophie Dziekan for a layup. Elissa Brett was fouled and hit a pair of shots from the stripe, and Hampton stole the ball and fed Jocelyn Tate for an easy layup ahead of the pack. When Brett scored on a driving layup late in the shot clock, the Falcons had an 8-0 run and a 30-20 lead.
• Two free throws from Dean snapped that run, but Lewis fed Hempfling for an 'and-1' layup, with the free throw making it an 11-point game.
• BG broke the Oakland press and Hempfling found Hampton, who laid the ball off to Brett for an easy layup, and after an offensive rebound by Brett, another Hempfling hoop gave the Falcons a 37-24 lead at the half.
• The Falcons ended the quarter on a 15-4 run.
THIRD QUARTER
• A nifty bounce pass by Lewis led to a Hempfling hoop that began the third-period scoring, but Dean hit the game's next two buckets. Brett was fouled on a drive and made both of the ensuing shots, and Tate found Sharps for a corner three and a 44-30 lead.
• A Brett layup was BG's only scoring over the next two-plus minutes, however, as the Golden Grizzlies got back to within nine points, 46-37, at the media timeout. Out of that break, Dziekan kicked the ball out to Hempfling for a three-pointer, and after Kayla Luchenbach scored to cut the BG lead to 10, the Falcons responded with a quick 6-0 run.
• That run, which took just 68 seconds, began with Dziekan grabbed the ball after a near BG turnover and found a cutting Tate for a layup. Then, after an Oakland shot-clock violation, Hampton drove and scored. Then, Hampton stole Aaliyah McQueen's pass and hit a pull-up jumper. BG's lead was 55-39 as OU took a timeout.
• The stoppage did not slow the Falcons, however. BG forced a miss, and Tate found Dziekan inside for a layup. In the late stages of the quarter, Hampton grabbed a defensive rebound, was fouled and hit two shots for a 20-point lead. Dean beat the buzzer with a long three-pointer to cut the Falcons' advantage to 17, at 59-42.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Brett found Tate for an open layup on the opening possession of the quarter, but Dean hit a pair of three-pointers to cut BG's lead to 61-48 with 7:26 to go.
• Tate, however, gained position inside, and Sharps lobbed the ball to the freshman for a layup. Breanne Beatty ended 90 seconds of scoreless basketball with two free throws, but Lewis found Madisen Parker for a corner three and a 66-50 lead midway through the period.
• Blackwell hit a long two-pointer, but Miller split a pair of charity tosses after the media timeout, then stole the ball on Oakland's next possession. Brett fired the ball ahead to Miller for a layup, a three-point play and a 70-52 lead with 4:12 remaining.
• Miller capped the Falcon scoring with another hoop with just under two minutes to go. Oakland ended the game on an 8-2 run, including a long three-pointer by Kendall Folley at the buzzer, to cut BG's late 18-point lead to 12.
