Brennan's early goal proves to be the winner
Senior Chris Brennan's goal in the 18th minute proved to be the winner as the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team beat Cleveland State University, 1-0, on Tuesday night (Sept. 17) inside Cochrane Stadium.
The Falcons move to 4-1-1 on the season. Brennan's goal was assisted by sophomore Matt Walters. Walters ran up the right side of the field and crossed it in to Brennan who fired a one-time shot at point-blank distance past CSU goalkeeper Omeed Naeemy for the only goal of the match.
BGSU senior Anthony Mwembia needed to make just two saves on the night en route to recording his fourth clean sheet of the young season.
Bowling Green outshot Cleveland State by a 14-7 count, and the Falcons had a slim 3-2 edge in shots on goal.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• The Falcons have scored first in all six matches this season, and BGSU has scored the first goal in each of the last 11 regular-season matches, dating to last season. The last time the opponent scored first in a regular-season matchup was on Oct. 9, 2018, when IUPUI got on the board first in Indianapolis. BGSU rallied for an overtime win on that night.
BONUS NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• BGSU, as mentioned, is 4-1-1 on the young season. The Falcons started last season with a record of 1-5-2, but since that time, BG has gone 9-2-3 in regular-season contests and 9-3-3 overall.
NEWS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• The Falcons edged CSU in corner kicks at 6-4 with the Vikings picking up 13 fouls to BG's nine and receiving the only yellow card of the match.
• Senior Chris Brennan scored his second goal in as many games. He has now scored at least one point in the last three matches and in five of the six matches this season.
• Brennan now leads the squad with eight points and three goals on the year. He has tripled his goal total and has nearly tripled his point total for all of last season.
• Sophomore Matt Walters picked up the assist on Brennan's goal. For Walters, it was his first assist of the season and the second of his BGSU career.
• The Falcons' 14 shots are the highest in a game since they had 15 versus Robert Morris in a 2-0 win earlier this year.
• Seven of the 10 field players to start for the Falcons had at least one shot. Junior Zach Buescher led the Falcons with three.
• Senior Anthony Mwembia raised his season save total to 15 with a pair of stops vs. the Vikings.
• Mwembia and junior Achille Robin continue to be the only Falcons to have played every minute of every match this season.
• The back line proved to be a major factor in allowing just two Cleveland State shots on goal. Robin, senior Tom Wrobel and Michael Montemurri all went the distance and played all 90 minutes of the match.
• Montemurri, a freshman, started his third straight match and played all 90 minutes for the third consecutive outing.
• Fellow freshman Eli Shope made his fourth appearance of the year as a substitute and played 17 minutes. Not long after checking into the match, Shope played a gorgeous low cross behind the CSU back line, that was fired just wide by onrushing sophomore Ike Swiger..
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 1' | Chris Brennan got things started right away receiving a pass inside the goalkeeper box on a cross, but the ball was quickly secured by the CSU goalkeeper.
• 10' | Zach Buescher took a shot off a BG corner kick that went just wide left of the net.
• 15' | Kale Nichols crosses into Chris Brennan but a CSU defender makes a great sliding stop to stop the attack.
• 16' | A yellow card was given to the Vikings.
• 18' | GOAL | Matt Walters won possession of the ball on the right side, taking it near the end line and slotting it to Brennan, who fired a shot inside the goalkeeper box that went past the CSU goalkeeper for the score. BG 1-0.
• 32' | Achille Robin took the ball all the way up the left side of the field and crossed it into the box, looking for Walters, but the play was nullified due to an offside call.
• 50' | Charlie Maciejewski had the first threat of the second half, putting a ball on goal after a Brennan pass into the box but CSU 'keeper Omeed Naeemy made the save.
• 53' | CSU headed a ball on net, but senior Anthony Mwembia was in perfect position to make the save.
• 73' | Eli Shope made a terrific through pass to Ike Swiger at the top of the goalkeeper box, but the ball is poked away by a CSU defender for a BG corner kick.
• 82' | Brennan had a shot on goal from inside the box after a Chris Sullivan pass up the left side.
