Jacob Scores as Falcons Draw with Demons
September 15, 2019 | Women's Soccer
BGSU wraps up non-conference schedule next Sunday at WVU
Junior Nikhita Jacob scored late in the first half on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 15), as the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team battled DePaul University to a 1-1, double-overtime draw. The match was held at Wish Field in Chicago.
Jacob's goal came on a header after a free kick by sophomore Alexis Miller, giving the Brown and Orange the lead at the 42:08 mark. But, the Blue Demons equalized on a goal just several minutes into the second half.
Senior Kathleen Duwve made four saves for the Falcons in Sunday's match.
NOTE OF THE DAY
• Four of the Falcons' first seven matches this season have gone to overtime. BG played a total of five OT contests in 2018, and that was the Falcons' highest single-season total of overtime matches in eight years (since BGSU played six such matches in 2010).
• The school record for overtime matches in a season is nine, set in the 2007 campaign.
• The Falcons now have a record of 1-1-2 in overtime games in 2019.
FALCON NOTES
• A total of 21 players saw action for the Falcons on Sunday. That group includes Talia Brown, who played in her first match since the 2017 season, along with Lena Kovar, who made her first appearance in three weeks. Kovar left the Xavier match (Aug. 25) due to injury and missed the Falcons' next four contests.
• In fact, 19 different players saw action in the first half alone at DePaul.
• Senior Hannah Dolfuss made her first start of the season, and her first since 2016. Dolfuss made 10 starts as a freshman in '16.
• Dolfuss became the 19th different player to start a match this season.
• Junior Nikhita Jacob's goal on Sunday was the second of her career, and her first since her freshman season. Jacob now has eight career points as a Falcon.
• Sophomore Alexis Miller picked up her second assist of the season, and the second of her BG career, on Jacob's goal.
• BGSU is now 2-3-2 on the season. The Falcons were 2-3-2 after seven matches last fall, before finishing the season with 14 total wins and Mid-American Conference regular-season and tournament championships.
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 13' | A bouncing ball was played into the 18-yard box, but redshirt junior Nikki Cox couldn't quite settle it in traffic, and DePaul 'keeper Mollie Eriksson was able to grab it.
• 16' | Senior Chelsee Washington hit a shot from just outside the box, but it went wide of the left goalpost.
• 24' | Freshman Katie Cox played a ball ahead to sophomore Sarah Allen, who was fouled about 25 yards from goal. Senior Maureen Kennedy drilled the ensuing free kick toward goal, but it went just wide of the left post.
• 26' | Sophomore Mackenzie Reuber made a nice run down the right side of the field, and flicked a pass to freshman Kennedy White, who won a corner kick. That corner, taken by Kennedy, was just a little too high for Washington, who was able to get her head on it but could not put it on frame.
• 30' | The first good chance for DePaul came after a throw-in was deflected out to the top of the box, but a Kristin Boos shot from 19 yards away went several feet wide of the far post.
• 37' | Junior Sophia Barnes made a nifty turn to evade a charging DePaul player near midfield, and Barnes then made a run down the left side of the field. But, her pass was just out of reach of Reuber on the right side of the box.
• 40' | DePaul won a free kick on the right side, and as the ball was played into the box, BG senior goalkeeper Kathleen Duwve was knocked down as she attempted to grab it. The ball bounced toward the left post, and junior Nikhita Jacob cleared it away.
• 43' | GOAL | Duwve played a long ball forward, and just over midfield, freshman Lauren Milner was fouled by a defender as she attempted to head the ball. Sophomore Alexis Miller took the resulting free kick, and lofted it toward a crowd of players on the left side of the box. The ball bounced once before Jacob headed it past the onrushing Eriksson and into the far side of the net.
SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 48' | Allen slid a right-side pass into a dangerous area in the box. Senior Hannah Dolfuss ran onto it, but her shot from just inside the box was blocked, and DePaul cleared the ball out of danger.
• 49' | GOAL | Morgan Turner cut from right to left at the top of the box and hit a curving shot into the upper left corner.
• 54' | Washington put Katie Cox in on the right side, but her shot was saved by the 'keeper. Two Falcons got a boot on the ensuing corner kick, but neither could direct it on frame.
• 55' | Off of the ensuing throw-in, Allen poked a shot toward the upper 90, but the Demons' GK was able to leap & grab it.
• 69' | On a quick counterattack by the Blue Demons, a hard shot by Jade Eriksen-Russo from the left side was saved by Duwve.
• 71' | Duwve made a great stop on another shot from the left side, as the senior 'keeper charged over to cut down the angle on a Mary Tierney shot.
• 79' | Off of a throw in near the BG bench, a turnaround shot by Boos at the top of the 18-yard box went just high.
• 86' | BG enjoyed a lengthy stretch of possession, with Jacob, Miller and Nikki Cox involved, but Cox's shot wsa hit directly at the 'keeper.
• 87' | Kennedy's free kick found the head of freshman Kennedy White in the box, but White's shot was also sent directly at Eriksson.
• 90' | After a DU foul, Kennedy took a free kick as the public address announcer began the 10-second countdown. Kennedy's kick sailed into the box. White, running away from goal with a defender beside her and the 'keeper behind her, was able to flick the ball over both DePaul players, but the shot was off target as the final seconds of regulation ticked away.
FIRST-OVERTIME HIGHLIGHTS
• 95'  The Falcons definitely controlled the first extra session. BG kept the ball in the offensive end of the field for nearly every second of the first five minutes of the period. After Nikki Cox was fouled approximately 25 yards from the end line on the left side, Kennedy's free kick went just around the far post. On the play, Washington was knocked to the ground by a defender as the two players & the DU 'keeper went for the ball, and the ball sailed over everyone and out of bounds.
• 96' | BG immediately stole the ensuing goal kick, and Washington played the ball ahead to Nikki Cox, but her shot was blocked on the left side of the box.
• 97' | DePaul's first OT foray into the BG end of the field resulted in a low right-side cross, but it was blocked by Reuber in the box, and freshman Audrey Shea cleared it away.
• 97' | That Shea clearance led to a quick BG counter, involving White, Katie Cox, Nikki Cox and Washington. Washington played a ball forward as White ran with a defender and the 'keeper came off of her line. The ball was knocked past the goalie and into the net, but the assistant referee's flag was raised, signifying an offside call against the Orange and Brown.
SECOND-OVERTIME HIGHLIGHTS
• 103' | Nikki Cox won a corner kick after a Reuber throw-in deep in the DePaul end, but nothing came of it.
• 107' | DePaul won back-to-back DU corners, taking one from each side butthe hosts did not find a scoring chance after either kick.
• 110' | The Blue Demons won another corner with just over 30 seconds to go. The Falcons were unable to clear the ball out of the defensive end for most of the remaining seconds, but the hosts were unable to muster a shot attempt before time ran out.
STATISTICS
• BGSU had a slim 11-10 edge in total shot attempts, and each team had five shots on goal.
• Both goalkeepers, BGSU's Kathleen Duwve and DU's Mollie Eriksson, had four saves.
• DePaul had seven corners to BG's three.
• Kristin Boos had a game-high six shot attempts, including two on goal, to lead the hosts in both categories. Nikhita Jacob and Kennedy White each were credited with two total shots, with Jacob putting both of hers on target.
WE'RE NOT EXACTLY SURE WHAT THIS MEANS
• Last season, the Falcons fell to Xavier (1-0 in 2-OT, Sept. 6) and Northwestern (2-0, Sept. 9), but responded by going on a 10-match unbeaten streak. That streak began with a 1-1 tie against DePaul before the 2018 Falcons reeled off nine-straight wins.
• Last week, BG suffered back-to-back losses – to Michigan and Michigan State – for the first time since last September, and the Falcons have responded with a 1-1 tie against DePaul.
WHAT'S NEXT?
• The Falcons conclude both a four-match road swing and the non-conference portion of the schedule next weekend, heading to Morgantown, W.Va., for a Sunday (Sept. 22) match at West Virginia. That contest is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
• Then, the Brown and Orange will begin the Mid-American Conference schedule the following weekend, when Akron comes to Cochrane Stadium on Friday, Sept. 27.
