BELLEVUE, Wash. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team dropped a 7-0 decision to the Seattle University Redhawks Sunday afternoon at Bannerwood Park. The win for Seattle gave the Redhawks a four-game sweep of the Falcons. The ballgame was delayed on two separate occasions, totaling an hour and two minutes.
The loss drops BGSU to 1-5 on the year, while Seattle improves to 5-3. After five scoreless innings to open the ballgame, Seattle plated one run in the sixth, four in the seventh, and two more in the eighth to pull away with the victory.
Zach Kendall got his first-career start on the mound for the Orange and Brown, and he was sensational. In five innings of shutout ball, he limited a red-hot offense to just two hits. Kendall struck out four batters, and issued five walks. The right-hander was able get out of jams – with runners in scoring position – multiple times, as well.
In the first, Seattle's Michael McCann registered a one-out double and moved over to third after a groundout to second. Kendall was able to leave that runner on third, however, striking out Sean Sutton on a 1-2 pitch.
In the second and third, Kendall pitched around a pair of one-out walks, leaving the runners at first both innings by recording consecutive outs. In the fourth, Kendall pitched around a big-time jam.
With the bases loaded and only one out, the right-hander struck out Jeffrey Morgan, before inducing a 4-6 fielder's choice. Second baseman Riley Minorik went down to a knee on a sharply-hit grounder, and flipped it over to Nick Glanzman at short for the out.
Kendall then worked a clean fifth, working around another one-out walk, to finish his five innings of work.
The Falcons nearly took the lead on two separate occasions, but a pair of nice defensive plays by Seattle kept the Falcons off the board. In the third, Glanzman crushed a ball with the bases loaded, but the third baseman stabbed it to get out of the jam. Glanzman then ripped a ball to deep center field in the sixth with Kory Brown on first, but a diving catch kept the ball from bouncing off the wall.
Seattle went on to score an unearned run off Devin Daugherty in the sixth, and scored the four runs in the seventh off Tony Landi. Daugherty has now logged seven innings on the season without allowing an earned run.
Seattle went on to score two more in the bottom of the eighth to conclude the game's scoring.
The Falcons will return to action on March 1, when they travel to the University of Dayton to take on the Flyers for a scheduled 3 p.m. start. Bowling Green will then begin its annual spring break trip by competing at the Elon Tournament in Elon, N.C. over March 4-6.
