collegiate goal in Sunday's match

With the win, the Dukes improve to 3-0-1 on the season. The Falcons lose for the first time in 2014, falling to 3-1-0 on the year.
Redshirt sophomore Max Auden and senior Danny Baraldi scored second-half goals as the Falcons rallied from a 2-0 deficit, but the Dukes' Fredrick Borenstein took a through ball from Thor Beckdahl and scored a 'Golden Goal' at the 104:56 mark.
DU also got goals from Kadeem Pantophlet and Dorian Kouame in the win.
"Duquesne is a good team with a lot of quality," said Eric Nichols. "Their second goal in particular was a first-class strike. They certainly caused us some problems. Â But we were pretty good as well, and we had some moments that were very good."
Baraldi and sophomores Pat Flynn and Joe Sullivan were named to the Duquesne Invitational's All-Tournament Team. Flynn and Sullivan scored two goals apiece in the Falcons' 4-0 win over Niagara University Friday afternoon (Sept. 5).
Flynn, who has eight goals on the season, very nearly had a ninth on Sunday, as he blasted a shot off the crossbar in the first overtime period. DU goalkeeper Sam Frymier had no chance to stop Flynn's shot from distance, but the ball rang off the 'bar and caromed away from the goalmouth.
Panthophlet opened the game's scoring in the 32nd minute. DU's Chris Alescio fired a shot from the left side of the box, and BGSU redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Nick Landsberger made a diving stop. The rebound went directly to Panthophlet, however, who deposited the rebound into the open net. The goal was the first given up by the BG defense in a span of 301:20 this season. And, it marked the first time the Falcons had trailed in the fall of 2014.
While the statistics were relatively even in all categories in the first half, the Falcons could not put a ball past Frymier in the opening 45 minutes, and the Dukes took that 1-0 lead into the intermission.
In the second half, the Falcons had several early chances, but a shot by Baraldi was blocked out of play, and an effort by senior Vlad Lekarev was stopped by Frymier. Lekarev's effort was impressive, as he got past his defender and got his boot on a long forward ball from a teammate, volleying it in stride toward the goal.
The Falcons were whistled for a foul with nearly 55 minutes gone, and while there could have been some question about the validity of the foul call, there was no questioning the quality of the resulting strike. Kouame took the free kick, and drilled a shot into the upper-right-hand corner of the goal to give the hosts a two-nil advantage.
Just over five minutes later, however, the Falcons responded. After a DU foul, sophomore Jacob Roth played a free kick toward the box, where fellow outside back Auden was stationed. Auden got his head on the ball to redirect it past Frymier for his first goal as a Falcon.
Auden's goal came at the 60:36 mark. Roth drew the lone assist, his team-leading fifth of the season, on the play.
The Falcons worked to score an equalizer as the minutes ticked away. Baraldi and junior Ryan James each saw shots from distance go wide of the mark, and Roth fired a free kick on frame, but it was stopped by Frymier. Roth led the Brown and Orange with three shots on goal in the match.
Finally, with under three minutes left in the second half, sophomore Joe Sullivan fired a shot, and a DU defender blocked the ball with his hand. A penalty kick was awarded, and Frymier was helpless to stop Baraldi's blast as it sailed into the net and tied the match with just 2:13 to play in regulation.
The teams went to overtime, and the only shot attempt in the first OT period was Flynn's blistering strike from distance that rang squarely off the crossbar.
While the Falcons had the better of the play in that first overtime session, the Dukes had the first scoring chance of the second OT. Borenstein fired a shot from the top of the box that was blocked by a BG defender. The rebound went to a DU player on the left side of the six-yard box, who quickly fired a shot. As Landsberger made the save on that shot, however, the whistle blew to indicate an offside call against the home side.
Less than a minute later, however, Borenstein ended the match. Beckdahl played a through ball on the turf to Borenstein, who deposited a low shot into the net at the 104:56 mark to keep his team undefeated and knock the Falcons from the ranks of the unbeaten.
The Falcons had a narrow 14-13 advantage in shot attempts, and each team put eight shots on goal. Frymier made six saves for the Dukes.
Landsberger had four saves in the match, and the Falcons also had a 'team save' as a shot by Alescio was blocked off the goal line by a BGSU defender in the first half.
"We showed a lot of character to come back from a two goal deficit but we aren't interested in moral victories," said Nichols. "We went to Pittsburgh to win two games and we came up short, and we will use this as fuel to get better."
The Falcons now return home for three of the next four matches, beginning with a Friday (Sept. 12) contest vs. Northern Kentucky University. First touch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field, and admission is free.
FALCON NOTES
* Redshirt sophomore Max Auden's goal on Sunday was the first of his collegiate career. Auden redshirted the 2012 season, his first at BGSU, and had one point on an assist last year. He has five points on a goal and three assists this fall to date.
* Senior tri-captain Danny Baraldi's goal on Sunday was his third of the season, matching his total for all of last year. Baraldi now has 53 career points in 58 matches as a Falcon, with 17 goals and 19 assists.
* Sophomore Jacob Roth's assist on Auden's goal Sunday was his team-leading fifth of the season. No BGSU player had more than four assists during all of last season.
* Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Nick Landsberger allowed the first goals of his BGSU career in the Duquesne match. Landsberger now has a goals-against average of 0.82 in this, his first playing season with the Falcons.
* Sophomore Pat Flynn was held off the scoresheet for the first time ever as a Falcon. Flynn, a transfer from DePaul University in his first season with the Brown and Orange, scored eight goals in BG's first three matches. He just missed scoring in a fourth-straight game, rattling the crossbar with a blast from distance in the first overtime.
