Martin, Chiricosta Named Papa John's Athletes Of The Week
April 16, 2012 | Baseball, General, Tennis
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Papa John's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are baseball player Patrick Martin and tennis player Nikki Chiricosta.
Male Athlete of the Week
Patrick Martin, a senior from Oregon, Ohio, pitched only three innings in two appearances on the week but he played a crucial role in giving Bowling Green a series victory over MAC leader Kent State. In a 14-inning victory Friday, Martin went the final two innings to pick up the win, retiring all six Kent State batters he faced. In Saturday's game, Martin set the Flashes down in order in the ninth to pick up a save, striking out two batters in the 9-6 victory.
Female Athlete of the Week
Nikki Chiricosta, a sophomore from Avon Lake, Ohio, went a perfect 4-0 on the week, winning two matches at No. 1 singles and two matches at No. 1 doubles. Against Valparaiso Tuesday, she did not lose a game, winning 8-0 in doubles and 6-0, 6-0 in singles. Against Western Michigan Friday, Chiricosta teamed with Emily Reuland for an 8-6 victory and then rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 singles win.
