Bruns, Eccleston Named Papa John's Athletes Of The Week
March 28, 2011 | Baseball, General, Tennis
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Papa John's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are baseball player Nick Bruns and tennis player Maddy Eccleston.
Male Athlete of the Week
Nick Bruns, a sophomore pitcher from St. Paris, Ohio, led the Falcons to an 8-0 victory Saturday afternoon after tossing a complete game shutout at Northern Illinois. He struck out 12 Huskies in the process, allowing just three hits and two walks along the way. At one point, he retired 11 straight batters and 13 of the last 14 total. It was the first shutout tossed by a Bowling Green pitcher since teammate Matt Malewitz blanked Northern Iowa on March 13, 2009.
Female Athlete of the Week
Maddy Eccleston, a sophomore from Toledo, Ohio, went 3-1 as the BGSU tennis team split a pair of road matches to begin the MAC schedule. She won a straight set singles match at the No. 2 flight against Buffalo and paired up with Christine Chiricosta for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles. In a match against Akron, the duo again picked up an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles and Eccleston extended Angelina Jogasuria, an All-MAC First Team selection a year ago, to three sets before finally falling at No. 2 singles.
