January 31, 2011 | General, Ice Hockey, Tennis
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Papa John's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are hockey player Andrew Hammond and women's tennis player Christine Chiricosta.
Male Athlete of the Week
Andrew Hammond, a sophomore from Surrey, British Columbia, picked up his first career conference win between the pipes as the BGSU hockey team beat Lake Superior State 2-1 Saturday. He stopped 24-of-25 shots with the only goal allowed coming on a second-period power play. He helped kill off five other power plays, including one 5-on-3 opportunity. He also played 32:33 in relief Friday night and had a weekend total of 39 saves on 41 shots, good for a 1.30 goals against average and a 95.1 save percentage.
Female Athlete of the Week
Christine Chiricosta, a senior from Avon Lake, Ohio, became the winningest player in BGSU tennis history as she helped the Falcons to a trio of 7-0 wins over Cleveland State, IUPUI and Butler. She had an overall record of 5-1 on the weekend, going 3-0 at the top singles flight and 2-1 at No. 1 doubles. She now has 154 career victories at BGSU, surpassing the old record of 153 set by Deidee Bissinger (1997-00).
