Freshman Maddy Eccleston picked up wins at both singles and doubles for Penny Dean's Falcons at UT
Rockets Eke Out 4-3 Win in Glass City
April 09, 2010 | Women's Tennis
The host University of Toledo rallied for a 4-3 win over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Friday afternoon (April 9). The Mid-American Conference dual match was held at the UT Varsity Courts.
With the victory, the Rockets improve to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in MAC action. The Falcons drop to 11-6 and 1-3, respectively.
BGSU won the doubles point, but the hosts picked up wins at each of the top-four singles flights for the victory.
In doubles play, the duo of senior co-captain Samantha Kintzel and freshman Katie Grubb picked up a decisive 8-2 win at the third flight. But, the Rockets posted a win by the identical score at the middle flight.
The doubles point came down to the match at flight number one, where junior Christine Chiricosta and freshman Maddy Eccleston topped UT's top-flight duo of Maha Guirguis and Martina Wodzinski, 8-5.
In singles play, however, the hosts picked up straight-set wins at each of the top-three flights. Wodzinski did not lose a game at the top flight, while Ashley Frey captured a victory at flight number three.
Eccleston's match was the next to finish, as the freshman swept UT's Rahshell Washington by identical 6-3 scores at the fifth flight. That victory tied the overall match at 2-2.
However, Guirguis captured a win at the second flight, and Nadia Zoubareva got past sophomore Jessica Easdale in three sets at the fifth level to clinch the overall victory for the Rockets.
Grubb garnered a win in three sets over Silvia Carvajal at the sixth flight, rallying for the victory after dropping the opening set. Grubb captured the third set by a 7-5 final.
Several veteran Falcons continued to move up the school's career lists. Kintzel has moved into a tie for ninth place on the career doubles wins list, with 68. She is now tied with one of her current coaches, assistant coach Cindy (Mikolajewski) Yonker. Kintzel now has 139 overall wins, and has moved into a tie for eighth place on that list.
Chiricosta, just a junior, has moved into sole possession of 13th place on the doubles wins list, with a total of 61. She now has 123 combined career wins, and is deadlocked with Heidi Romer in 16th place on that BGSU chart.
The Falcons will close the away portion of the regular-season schedule on Saturday afternoon (April 10), heading to Ypsilanti to take on Eastern Michigan University. Following that match, the Brown and Orange will play three-straight matches at Keefe Courts to end the regular season.
