Win Streak Hits Double Digits After Falcons Defeat Miami
April 30, 2010 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Bowling Green extended their winning streak to ten games after they tagged the Miami RedHawks for runs in six straight inning, including eight between the sixth and seventh frames. Four different Falcons went deep on five total home runs and Brennan Smith quietly tied his season-high for strikeouts with ten on the day in Bowling Green's 14-8 win on Friday afternoon.
After Bowling Green trailed 2-1 after the top of the second inning, the offense got down to business and scored 13 unanswered runs, all in consecutive at-bats. The Falcons tied the game at two runs after the second, then began to plate a sea of runs with a three-run third inning.
Jon Berti hit his third home run in his last five games with a line shot over the right center field fences, his fourth jack on the season. With two outs and Mark Galvin on base after a RedHawk error, Ryan Schlater plated his fellow senior with a RBI double to right field. Continuing the third inning senior showcase, Logan Meisler scored Schlater from second with a single to right field, putting Bowling Green up 5-2 after three innings.
Derek Spencer began his superb day from the plate with his first of two home runs on the day. In the fifth inning, he scored another Bowling Green run on a no-doubt, solo home run to left field, marking the second consecutive inning BGSU led off with a solo shot.
In the sixth, the Falcons pounded out four runs, beginning with a two-run home run by #T.J. Blanton# over the BGSU Centennial signs in left. A second two-run homer was added to the mix with Spencer's second moonshot of the day, also scoring Dennis Vaughn.
Bowling Green scored four more times in the following inning to make the score going into the eighth 14-2. Three straight singles from the Falcon offense loaded the bases, but Miami came through with a clutch 5-2-3 double play to cut a run at the plate and notch two outs. But the Falcons dawns the two-out rally caps and the next batter made RedHawk pitcher Brandon Adkins pay. Blanton posted his third and fourth RBI on a single to left center field, scoring both Falcon runners. Vaughn wanted in on the home run parade and blasted his second of the season, a two-run shot that plated the Falcons' 13th and 14th runs of the day.
Smith (4-4) tossed 7.1 innings of Friday's victory, tying a season-high in punch outs with ten. Between the fourth and seventh innings, Smith allowed only two hits to the RedHawks and struck out six hitters. He earned his fourth win of the season after allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks.
Galvin went 2-for-5 on the day, extending his own personal hit streak to 16 games. Four Falcons finished with three hits. Blanton went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI. Vaughn finished 3-for-4 as well, scoring twice and ended his night with three ribbies. Schlater and Berti also had three hits on the day.
Bowling Green improves to 20-18-1 overall and gets their tenth Mid-American Conference win of the season. After Kent State's come-from-behind win over Ohio earlier today, the Falcons still trail the Flashes by one game in the MAC East race for first place. With their tenth conference win, it marks the seventh straight year that the Falcons have won ten or more MAC games in a season. Miami falls to 20-21 overall and drops one more game behind Bowling Green in the conference standings with a MAC record of 7-9.
