Falcon tennis junior captures weekly conference honor
Bowling Green State University junior Christine Chiricosta has been named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week. The announcement was made by the conference office Friday morning (Jan. 22).
Chiricosta, a native of Avon Lake, Ohio (Avon Lake H.S.), earns the honor after going a perfect 4-0 last weekend, as the Falcons began the spring portion of the 2009-10 season. In her first year at the top singles flight, Chiricosta picked up wins over Sarah Miller of Louisville and Alexandra Rydberg of Morehead State. Both wins came in straight sets, with Chiricosta losing a total of only two games in the latter match (6-1, 6-1).
In doubles play, Chiricosta teamed with freshman Maddy Eccleston for a pair of 8-3 victories at the top flight. The Falcons posted a 6-1 win over MSU after dropping a 5-2 decision to UL, with both matches played at Louisville's Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
On the season, Chiricosta has an overall record of 16-5, including a team-best 9-2 singles record and a 7-3 doubles mark. She picked up her 50th career win(s) in both singles and doubles over the weekend.
Relatively early in her junior season, Chiricosta has a stellar career record of 101-36. She has a 51-16 singles ledger and a 50-20 doubles mark. Chiricosta enters this weekend's action ranked 23rd in school history in combined wins. She is 18th on the singles wins list and is deadlocked for 21st on the doubles chart.
In the classroom, Chiricosta has a perfect cumulative grade point average of 4.00 as an adolescent/young adult/secondary education major. Last spring, she was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team, becoming the first student-athlete in BGSU women's tennis history to earn such an honor. On the court, she has been named to the All-MAC Second Team in each of her first two seasons.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Week honor is presented to one male and one female student-athlete each week. To qualify for nomination, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically, must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and must have performed well during the prior week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean, currently 1-1 on the young dual-match season, travel to Cincinnati for a pair of matches this weekend. Chiricosta, Dean and the Falcons will take on UC in Saturday (Jan. 23) action before meeting Xavier on Sunday (Jan. 24). The home portion of the season begins next weekend, with a Jan. 30 match vs. IPFW at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
