Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green senior forward Nate Miller did everything in his power to lead his team to a victory Saturday but the Canisius Golden Griffins held BGSU to just four points in overtime and came away with a 71-66 win in Anderson Arena.
In a contest that featured seven ties and 21 lead changes, Miller put Bowling Green on his back and almost had enough to guide the Falcons to the win. He needed 11 points to become the 37th player in BG history to score 1,000 in a career and he blew past that total with a career-high 22, adding 13 rebounds, three steals and a show-stopping three-pointer that forced overtime.
Bowling Green trailed 61-56 when Canisius guard Robert Goldsberry missed a pair of free-throws with 26 seconds remaining. Joe Jakubowski knocked down a three-pointer in the corner seven seconds later to cut the deficit to two, but Golden Griffins' leader Frank Turner had a chance to put the game away with two free-throws with 15 seconds left. He was only able to make one and Miller grabbed the rebound off the miss of the second charity shot, dribbled up the court and nailed the game-tying three-pointer with seven seconds left.
The Falcons seemed to have momentum as the overtime session started but neither team was able to score in the first half of the extra period. Miller finally dented the scoreboard, putting in a lay-up that gave BG a 64-62 lead with 2:13 to go. Canisius came right down the floor and got a three-pointer from Julius Coles, his fourth of the day, but Bowling Green was not done yet.
Miller hit a jumper with 1:30 left that gave the Falcons the lead again but Greg Logins' lay-up with 1:14 to go was the final lead change of the afternoon. After a BG turnover, Logins was fouled and made both free-throws. Miller missed a three-pointer to tie the game with 12 seconds remaining and Coles put the game away with two more free-throws.
Miller made 10-of-19 field goal attempts on the day, playing 42 of the 45 minutes. Brian Moten added 14 points in a starting role with Chris Knight missing the game with injury and 11 of those came in the first half. Joe Jakubowski ended with 12 points and Darryl Clements had eight points and five assists.
Bowling Green shot just 39.7 percent for the game but did make 9-of-21 three-point attempts. Canisius outrebounded BG 47-36 and grabbed 15 offensive rebounds which accounted for a 17-4 edge in second chance points. The Falcons committed just 10 turnovers, three less than the Golden Griffins.
With Miller's scoring milestone, he becomes the 37th player in school history with 1,000 points, the 14th to have 1,000 points and 500 rebounds and just the fourth with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 125 steals.
Canisius improves to 9-18 with the win and Bowling Green falls to 15-11. The Falcons, still 8-4 in the Mid-American Conference, will host Kent State Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. in a pivotal MAC game as the two teams are tied for the second best record in conference. The game can be seen live on Fox Sports Ohio.
