ROCHESTER, Mich. (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team battled host Oakland University to a 0-0 tie Friday afternoon (Aug. 29). The double-overtime non-conference contest was held at the OU Soccer Field.
The scoreless stalemate leaves both the Falcons and the Golden Grizzlies with 0-1-1 records on the young season.
Redshirt sophomore Alexa Arsenault made four saves to earn her first shutout of the season and her seventh overall shutout in 15 career starts.
BGSU outshot the hosts by a 13-7 count, and the Falcons had a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Shannon Coley had seven saves for the Grizzlies.
Falcon freshmen combined for seven of BGSU's 13 shots, with Alyssa Zuccaro recording a game-high five. Two of Zuccaro's shot attempts were headers that rang off the crossbar, just 37 seconds apart, in the first half.
"I give credit to the team today, for battling through a very competitive 90 minutes of regulation, plus two periods of overtime," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "I'm actually surprised that we didn't win the game, considering we had a number of good opportunities to do so.
"We are indeed disappointed that we didn't win, but -- after last week (at Cincinnati), when we felt we threw the game away -- we are in a much better place than we were a week ago, and that is a reflection of the progress the team has made. It was a much better performance today, especially for the defense in getting a shutout, and we know we face a very stiff challenge on Sunday."
The Falcons will return to the pitch on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 31), opening the home portion of the 2008 schedule against Michigan State University. The match will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field, and will feature a postgame autograph session with the BGSU players.
