BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The visiting University of Toledo won five of the six singles matches, dealing the Bowling Green State University tennis team a 6-1 setback on Saturday afternoon (April 21). The Mid-American Conference dual match was held at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus.
With the win, the Rockets improve to 15-5 overall, and UT ends the regular season with a MAC record of 6-2. The Falcons drop to 12-8 and 4-4, respectively.
The Falcons' loss, coupled with Saturday's other outcomes around the MAC, puts BGSU in a three-way tie for fourth place in the final regular-season standings. The Falcons, Eastern Michigan and Miami all end the season with 4-4 MAC records.
The Rockets began the day by winning the doubles point, although the outcomes could hardly have been closer. UT won at the top-two flights, with each requiring a tiebreaker.
At the top flight, UT's Myriam Cueva and Nadia Zoubareva squeaked past junior tri-captain Jenna Nussbaum and sophomore Kelsey Jakupcin by a 9-8 final. Toledo's second-flight team of Maha Guirguis and Martina Wodzinski also won by a 9-8 score, just getting past soph Libby Harrison and junior Andrea Volle.
BGSU's third-flight duo left no doubt about the outcome of their match. On 'Senior Day' at Keefe Courts, senior tri-captain Ashley Jakupcin teamed with freshman Samantha Kintzel to broom UT's Jenny Belsky and Sarah Horning by a dominant 8-0 final.
Jakupcin's success continued in singles action, as the senior was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Cueva in the top flight in her final match at Keefe. That match, however, was the Falcons' lone win during the singles portion of Saturday's match.
The Rockets captured straight-sets wins at each of flights two through six.
Volle battled UT's Jessica Azoulay to a second-set tiebreaker at the six flight before succumbing. In addition to Ashley Jakupcin and Volle, the Falcons' singles competitors included Kintzel (second flight), Kelsey Jakupcin (third), freshman Katia Babina (fourth) and Nussbaum (fifth).
The Falcons' next action will come on Friday (April 27) in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Championships in Toledo. BG will face an opponent to be determined.

* The MAC office will announce the conference tournament pairings in the near future ... the Falcons, as mentioned, tied for fourth place with 4-4 records ... the first tiebreaker is head-to-head records, but each team went 1-1 against the other two clubs (BGSU defeated Miami, 5-2; EMU defeated BGSU, 4-3; Miami defeated EMU, 4-3).
* The Falcons will be either the fourth, fifth or sixth seed for the MAC Championships ... BGSU will face EMU, Miami or Toledo in the quarterfinals on Friday.
* All three teams involved in the tie posted wins over Ball State, Northern Illinois and Akron ... and, BGSU, EMU and Miami all lost to Western Michigan, Buffalo and UT in the regular season.
* Sophomore Stefanie Menoff did not play in Saturday's match ... Menoff, who has a singles record of 23-2 this season, was 7-0 in MAC singles play after a Friday win ... but, she became ill on Friday night and was unable to play vs. the Rockets.

* Ashley Jakupcin's singles win was the 76th of her Falcon career, moving her into a tie for third place on the BGSU list ... she is deadlocked with Abby Bratton (1998-2001) and Meghan Rhodes (1998-2001) ... the school record is 79 career singles wins, shared by Deidee Bissinger (1997-2000) and Julie Weisblatt (1994-97).
