MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Several streaks ended for the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Friday afternoon (Oct. 21), but the most important streak continued. That streak, of course, is the Falcons' winning streak, now at a school-record six matches after a 2-1 win over the Chippewas. The Mid-American Conference match was held at the CMU Soccer Complex.
Junior Lindsay Carter scored both goals for the Falcons, who improved to 11-6-0 overall and 7-2-0 in MAC action. The Chippewas fall to 6-8-2 and 5-3-1, respectively.
With the win, along with Western Michigan's 1-0 loss to Miami Friday afternoon, the Falcons have moved into a first-place tie with the Broncos. BGSU and Western each have 21 points, with Ball State in third place with 19 points. WMU and BSU will meet in Muncie on Sunday.
Carter's first goal of the afternoon came with just under 30 minutes elapsed. Senior Julie Trundle played a long ball into the box to the junior,, who slid the ball under advancing CMU goalkeeper Anne Decker. Trundle picked up an assist on the play, the lone goal of the opening half.
Carter struck again early in the second half, this time with her left foot. She curled her shot, taken from approximately 15 yards out, around Decker and into the side netting. Senior Britt Anderson and freshman Corbie Yee drew assists on the goal, which came at the 51:30 mark.
The Chippewas cut the lead in half, and became the first team to score on the Falcons since Oct. 2, with a late goal. Freshmen Erica Rohren and Katy Boggan, the team's top-two scorers, teamed up on the goal. Boggan's third goal of the season came with 8:47 left in the half.
Senior Ali Shingler and the Falcon defense would allow no more goals, however. In fact, the back line did not surrender a Central shot attempt over the remainder of the match, and BG had the road win.
For the match, the Chippewas had narrow advantages in shot attempts, 13-12, and shots on goal, 5-4. Shingler made four saves in goal, while Decker had a pair of stops for the hosts.
"It was a tremendous road performance today, in that we took our opportunities and scored goals when those opportunities arose," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "Also, we withstood a tremendous amount of pressure from Central, particularly as the game got into its latter stages.
"We talked a lot about composure before the game, and how important it was to maintain our composure in such a highly-charged, competitive atmosphere. Lindsay Carter was the epitome of composure with her two strikes, one with her left foot and one with her right. She maintained her composure in front of the goal, and that made the difference.
"Ali Shingler deserves credit as well. She made a spectacular save near the end of the game, with the rebound hitting the post, so we did get a little luck along the way. Unfortunately, we did concede a goal near the end, but we hung on, and showed good discipline to prevent Central from getting any more chances after that.
"We are delighted, of course, with the win and three more points in the MAC, and we now must prepare to battle a tough Eastern Michigan team at their place on Sunday."
That match vs. the Eagles will begin at 1:00 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 23) at EMU's Scicluna Field.
