BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green State University senior midfielder Madison Schupbach (Rochester, Mich.) has been named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week, as announced on Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 17). The TDS National Team of the Week is comprised of 11 players from throughout the NCAA Division I ranks. In addition, senior forward Skylar Fleak was one of six players to earn honorable mention recognition this week.
Schupbach led the Falcons to a weekend sweep of Buffalo and Akron in their final two home games of the regular season. She scored five points by scoring a goal and assisting on three others. She played a role in four of BGSU's five goals during the weekend.
On Friday, Bowling Green found itself down 2-0 to Buffalo early in the second half. Schupbach helped the Falcons halve the lead in the 63rd minute by sending a pass across the box that Skylar Fleak sent past the goalkeeper. After Fleak tied the game in the 76th minute, Schupbach earned her fifth career game-winning assist by sending a corner kick that Fleak headed into the net with 7:22 left on the clock. The comeback from two goals down was the first by BGSU in 14 years.
Schupbach withstood rain and wind on Sunday against Akron to register her first career game-winning goal. Her left-footed shot past the Zips' keeper in the 53rd minute gave BGSU a 1-0 lead. She later added an assist on the Falcons' insurance goal in the 58th minute.
Schupbach's five-point weekend is her career best, and her three assists increase her season total to six. That doubles her previous career total, and she ranks second in the MAC for assists in 2017. She also has set personal bests with three goals and 12 points thus far this season.
Skylar Fleak (Sunbury, Ohio) was tabbed honorable mention after scoring three goals and adding an assist in the Falcons' two games. Her hat trick on Friday night was her second of the season, and her game-winning goal off Schupbach's corner was her fourth of 2017 and the eighth of her career. Fleak has helped BGSU become the top offense in the MAC by providing 11 goals and five assists. She is second in the MAC in goals and fourth in assists, and her 27 points leads the league. Nationally, she ranks in the top 20 for both points and goals. On Tuesday, Fleak was named MAC Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season.
Following the weekend sweep, BGSU is now 10-5-0 overall, 5-3-0 in the MAC, and 6-2-0 at home. Each mark is the program's best since 2008, and the Falcons are one win shy of securing its first MAC Tournament berth in nine years. Bowling Green begins a critical road trip that closes the regular season by traveling to Ohio University on Thursday and league-leader Kent State on Sunday.
