Fleak Named MAC Offensive Player of the Week for Third Time
October 17, 2017 | Women's Soccer
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Senior forward Skylar Fleak has been named the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the third time in 2017, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 17). Fleak's seven-point weekend helped lead the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team to a pair of wins over Buffalo and Akron last weeken, and with this award, she becomes the first player in team history to win MAC Player of the Week three times in a single season.
On Friday against the Bulls, BGSU fell behind 2-0 in the 60th minute, but Fleak cut the deficit in half just three minutes later. That started an amazing run that included the equalizer in the 76th minute and the game-winning header off a Madison Schupbach corner with 7:22 left in regulation. Fleak's hat trick is her second of the season, which ties a BGSU record, and she needed only 20:16 of game time to accomplish it. Her hat trick is the fourth-fastest in school history, and she did it all while playing just 53 reserve minutes while recovering from an ankle injury. Her game-winning goal was the eighth of her career and fourth in 2017; she is tied for second in school history for most game-winning goals in one season.
On Sunday, Fleak returned to the starting lineup and earned her fifth assist of 2017 when she fed Erica Hubert for an insurance goal in BGSU's 2-0 win. Fleak's three goals and one assist over the entire weekend resulted in seven points, as the Falcons improved to 6-2-0 at home, 5-3-0 in the MAC, and 10-5-0 overall. Each of those records are the team's best since 2008.
Fleak is now second in the MAC with 11 goals and tied for fifth with five assists. Her 27 total points are best in the conference. Nationally, she is tenth in points and points per game, 13th in total goals, 15th in goals per game, and 14th in shots-on-goal per game. She leads a BGSU offense which leads the MAC in every major offensive category and is 31st nationally with 2.13 goals per game.
Led by first-year head coach Matt Fannon, Bowling Green plays a pair of road games this week against Ohio and Kent State. The team needs only one win in its final three games to secure its first MAC Tournament berth in nine years, but they are also in serious contention to host a tournament quarterfinal. Currently, the Falcons are tied for third in the MAC with 15 points; the top four teams host a quarterfinal match.
