BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. -- Skylar Fleak scored her second hat trick of the season and led the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team to an important 3-2 comeback victory over the University of Buffalo on Friday evening (Oct. 13). The Falcons won after trailing by two goals for the first time since 2003 and did so in regulation time for only the third time in team history. Fleak joined Kristy Coppes (2004) as the only two BGSU players to post two hat tricks in the same season.
Both teams had solid opportunities in a very even first half, but Julia Benati's goal in the 34th minute allowed the Bulls to take a 1-0 lead into haltime. Following the break, BGSU's defense restricted Buffalo's opportunities to just five shots and only one attempt on goal. However, that one attempt resulted in a goal by Gianna Yurchak in the 60th minute for a 2-0 edge.
The Falcons pressured Buffalo's goalkeeper throughout the second half and took seven shots on goal and 14 total shots. For a while, it appeared nothing would work. Madison Schupbach had a shot tick inches wide of the right post in the first minute of the second half. Laura Dougall saved a penalty kick by Rachel Winters just 25 seconds after the Bulls' second goal. After that, Fleak took over.
Fleak, playing in a reserve role while recovering from an injury, got behind the defense off a pass from Schupbach in the 63rd minute and circled a kick around Dougall to halve Buffalo's lead. After more close calls, Fleak put home the equalizer with 14:05 left on the clock off a touch pass from Marissa Swindell. More pressure by the Falcons resulted in back-to-back corners in the 83rd minute. On the second, Schupbach sent a perfect kick into the box that Fleak headed into the net for the game winner.
NOTE OF THE DAY: MULTI-GOAL COMEBACKS
It has been a long time since Bowling Green has overcome a two-goal deficit for a win. In fact, this is just the third game the Falcons have won since 2005 in which it has allowed multiple goals (vs. Indiana State, 2010; vs. Eastern Illinois, 2015). BGSU's first two-goal comeback was in a 4-2 win at Northern Illinois on Sept. 28, 2001; the Falcons scored the final four after trailing 2-0 in that one. In 2003, they did it three times -- all on the road. They beat Miami 3-2 after trailing 2-0 on Oct. 5, 2003. The Falcons then won 4-3 in overtime at NIU after trailing both 2-0 and 3-1 on Oct. 12, 2003. Most recently, BGSU trailed 2-0 at Marshall on Oct. 26, 2003 before winning 4-3 in overtime.
