BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. -- The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team finished their best season at Cochrane Stadium in nine years with an emphatic 2-0 shutout of the University of Akron on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 15). The Falcons earned a 6-2 record in home games during the 2017 regular season, which is the team's best mark since it went 8-1-1 in 2008. Overall, BGSU is now 10-5-0 and 5-3-0 in the Mid-American Conference. Both records are similarly the squad's best since the team was 12-6-4 (6-3-2 MAC) in 2008.

However, Akron goalkeeper Amani Jiu made five saves to keep the match scoreless at the half. Defensively, BGSU allowed the Zips virtually no chances on offense and held them to just one shot during the opening 45 minutes.
Bowling Green quickly resumed its attacks on Jiu in the second half, and those attacks quickly resulted in the first goal. Six minutes in, Skylar Fleak to a strong shot that was barely tipped over the crossbar. The Falcons then fought the ball back into their offensive third, where Erica Hubert played Madison Schupback into the box. Schupbach made a left-footed blast past Jiu into the right half of the net for 1 -0 lead 7:09 into the final half. Hubert put BGSU up by two with a goal five minutes later following assists from Fleak and Schupbach.
Akron made valiant attempts late in the game to get back into the match, including an Ashley Amato shot that ticked off the crossbar and a Raechel Eck shot off a corner that the FAlcons wisely blocked. The Zips ended the match with four shots, but no shots on goal.
