NOTE OF THE DAY - THE BIG FOUR-OH (PLUS ANOTHER OH): FALCONS FIRST TO 400
With Saturday's blowout win over Akron, the Falcons reached a milestone. Bowling Green has become the first program in Mid-American Conference history to post 400 conference wins. BGSU has an all-time record of 400-189 (.679) in MAC regular-season contests. No other MAC program has more than 384 league wins (Toledo), and only one other MAC institution (UT) has won more than 60 percent of its games in conference play over the years.
A TRADITION OF SUCCESS
>> Bowling Green has won 14 MAC regular-season championships and 11 league tournament titles, the highest totals among all conference teams. Prior to the injury-plagued season of 2014-15, the Falcons had won at least 20 games in a MAC-record 11 consecutive seasons. BG won at least 24 games in nine-straight seasons during that span, losing just 18 total games in MAC regular-season play during those nine years.
>> The Falcons made 10 consecutive national postseason trips from 2005-14, with five NCAA Championships appearances and five trips to the WNIT during that time. The 2006-07 team was the most successful in MAC history, winning a league-record 31 games en route to an NCAA 'Sweet Sixteen' appearance.
>> Overall, BGSU has won 20 or more games 19 times, the highest total among all Mid-American Conference women's basketball-playing institutions.
SCOUTING BSU
Ball State is 16-7 on the season, and the Cardinals are 9-2 in MAC play. BSU picked up an 81-60 win at Miami Saturday afternoon for the team's sixth win in the last seven games. The Cards are 8-3 at home, 7-2 on the road and 1-2 in neutral-site games this season. In MAC play, BSU is 4-1 at Worthen Arena and 5-1 on the road. Senior center Renee Bennett and junior forward Moriah Monaco rank 1-2 on the team in scoring, with 16.8 and 16.3 points per game, respectively. Bennett also has a BSU-best 7.7 rebounds per game, while Monaco has 6.2 boards per outing and has made a team-leading 71 three-point field goals. Senior guard Jill Morrison and sophomore guard Destiny Washington have 10.1 ppg apiece, while sophomore guard Carmen Grande leads the club in assists (a MAC-best 7.6 apg) and steals (1.8 spg). A total of eight letterwinners, including four starters, returned for head coach Brady Sallee this winter. Last year's BSU team went 22-0 overall and 13-5 in the MAC, advancing to the WNIT.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Ball State, 44-19, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Cardinals have won the last five meetings. BSU captured last season's lone matchup, a 67-56 decision at the Stroh Center (Jan. 16, 2016), and the Cards downed the Falcons by a 75-53 count at the Stroh two-and-a-half weeks ago (Jan. 21, 2017). BG's last visit to Muncie saw Ball win, 77-52, on Valentine's Day of 2015. Prior to BSU's current five-game streak, the Falcons had won the last five games vs. the Cardinals. BG's last victory over the Cards was a 72-61 decision on the road in January of 2014. BGSU is 24-5 in home games (1-3 in the Stroh Center), 18-11 on the road and 2-3 in neutral-site meetings with the Cardinals over the years. Jennifer Roos is 2-5 against BSU as a collegiate head coach.
UP NEXT
Following the BSU game, the Falcons will return to the road this weekend, making a short trip up I-75 to face Toledo on Saturday (Feb. 11). The Falcons and Rockets will meet in a 7:00 p.m. start at Savage Arena in the Glass City. Then, the Brown and Orange will return home to face Western Michigan at the Stroh Center next Wednesday night (Feb. 15), with that contest also scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
