Battle, Parker, Perry, Thompson & Williams to join BGSU in 2017-18 academic year
Bowling Green State University women's basketball coach Jennifer Roos has announced the signing of five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Terri Battle (Chicago, Ill.), Madisen Parker (Fort Wayne, Ind.), Angela Perry (Rochester, Ill.), Sierra Thompson (Mattoon, Ill.) and Kennedy Williams (Marshall, Ill.) will join the Falcon program for the 2017-18 academic year.
"Our program is excited to announce the signing class of 2017," said Roos. "This class represents the core values of our women's basketball program, our University and our community. As young adults, they have proven to be responsible in three areas: academically, socially and athletically. They have each achieved success in the classroom, on the court and in their respective communities.
"Throughout the recruiting process, our staff enjoyed getting to know them as people. We were greatly impressed with the strong individual work ethic that each one possesses, and that is an intangible strength which speaks volumes about who they are. I greatly appreciate the hard work of our staff in signing this recruiting class. We are looking forward to following their successes during their final year of high school."
Battle, a 6-2 post player, is currently in her senior year at Simeon Career Academy. She played in 28 games for the Wolverines last season, averaging 4.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest. She plays AAU ball for the Illinois Lady Raptors under coach Briant Mills, and had a very successful summer on the AAU circuit, as she was named to the US Junior National Midwest Showcase all-star team
"Terri is a player who will dramatically impact any team she plays on," said Roos. "She has the uncanny ability to rebound the basketball well at both ends of the floor. Terri will bring a high level of skill, energy, and the desire to get better every day."
Parker, a 5-9 shooting guard, is a senior at Homestead H.S. under coach Rod Parker, her father. She earned All-State First-Team honors from both the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) and the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association (ICGSA) in her junior year, and earned a plethora of other honors as the Spartans went 26-3 overall and advanced to the Class 4A semistates. Parker averaged 14.3 ppg, 5.8 rpg and three assists per game last year, shooting 46.8% from three-point range. She has helped the Spartans to an overall record of 76-8 in her first three seasons, along with three conference titles, three sectional crowns, two regional championships, a semi-state title and a state runner-up finish. A softball standout as well, Parker has earned all-league and all Northeast Indiana First-Team honors in each of her first three seasons on the diamond. She has a 31-4 career pitching record, and a career batting average of .514. Parker is a member of the National Honor Society. She has played AAU ball for Always 100.
"Madisen is one of the premier shooters in the state of Indiana, "said Roos. "She has the ability to score consistently beyond the arc and off the bounce. In addition, she has an advanced knowledge and understanding of strategy of the game."
Perry, a 6-2 center, is in her senior year at Rochester H.S. She is the 14th-ranked center in the country in the Class of 2017, according to ESPN, and was an IBCA All-State selection. Perry, who has surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career, also has been named to the Class 3A and 4A All-State team, and has earned three letters in volleyball as well as basketball for the Rockets entering her senior campaign. She has been named to the Academic All-Conference honor roll in both sports. She has played AAU basketball for the Illinois Predators under coach Joby Crum.
"Angela is the highest-ranked player in her position who has signed to play in our program out of high school," said Roos. "She is extremely versatile with her back to the basket being able to score over either shoulder in the paint. Also, she has worked extremely hard and has gained confidence in extending her range beyond the three-point arc. She has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success at Rochester High School and in AAU ball.
Thompson, a 5-11 forward, is a senior at Mattoon H.S. An all-conference first-team selection as both a sophomore and junior, she earned IBCA All-State Special Mention in the latter season. She averaged a double-double for the Green Wave in each of the last two seasons, and has 906 career rebounds entering her senior year.
"Sierra will bring speed and athleticism to our program," said Roos. "She is a relentless rebounder and can score in a variety of ways especially driving to the hoop. Fans will immediately appreciate how hard she competes on every play."
Williams, a 5-6 point guard, is in her senior year at Marshall H.S. She was fourth in the state of Illinois in scoring last year, averaging 24.4 ppg for the Lions. Williams set the school record for points in a season, with 659, en route to All-Conference as well as AP and IBCA All-State First-Team honors.
"Kennedy will be one of the quickest and best ball handlers to play point guard in our program," said Roos. "In addition to her ball-handling skills, she will be a strong scoring threat beyond the arc. Lastly, she has the ability to read primary and secondary defenders and distribute the basketball to other teammates in order for them to be successful."
The Falcons have 13 student-athletes, including four seniors – Leah Bolton, Rachel Konieczki, Abby Siefker and Ashley Tunstall – on the 2016-17 roster. BGSU opens the '16-17 regular season on Friday night (Nov. 11) at Eastern Kentucky University in a 5:30 p.m. contest, and the Falcons' home opener is set for Tuesday (Nov. 15), as the University of Cincinnati comes to the Stroh Center for a 12:00 p.m. start.
