BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team kicks off its 2017 Mid-American Conference season with a pair of home matches this weekend. The Falcons will host the Ball State Cardinals (2-5-1) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night (Sept. 22). Two days later, BGSU will return to the pitch at 1:00 p.m. for a contest against the Miami RedHawks (0-7-0). Both matches will take place at Cochrane Stadium.
The Falcons finished their non-conference schedule with a 2-1 victory over Robert Morris last Friday. BGSU secured goals from Erica Hubert and Skylar Fleak while Kathleen Duwve started and won her first match of the season as goalkeeper. Bowling Green's 5-2-0 record is the team's best seven-game start since 1999 and best non-conference mark since 2001. With a win on Friday, the team would win six of its first eight games for the first time in program history.Â
SCOUTING BALL STATE
Ball State has bookended their non-conference schedule with a pair of shutout victories at home. They opened 2017 with a 2-0 win over Fort Wayne and most recently took down Western Illinois 3-0. In between, they had a 1-1 draw with Appalachian State at home and five road losses. Those losses include three 1-0 games (at Xavier, Baylor and IUPUI), a 4-0 loss at Notre Dame, and a 2-1 decision at TCU. Sam Kambol has the individual team lead with three goals, while Amanda Shaw has scored twice in 20 shots. Alessandra Fistrovich leads the Cardinals with two assists.
Ball State head coach Craig Roberts is in his eight season at the Cardinals' helm. His record at BSU is 76-51-3, and he lead his team to back-to-back MAC regular season championships in 2015 and 2016.
SCOUTING MIAMI
The RedHawks have struggled to an 0-7-0 record against a challenging non-conference schedule in 2017. Miami opened at Saint Louis, where they fell 3-0. They fell 2-0 at Louisville before dropping three straight home matches to Miami (Fla.) (2-0), Wright State (2-1) and Illinois (1-0). Most recently, they lost back-to-back 1-0 decisions on the road against Evansville and Illinois State. Miami's only goal in 2017 was scored by Olivia Winnett in the final minute against WSU. She has 16 of Miami's 66 shots this season, as the RedHawks have been out-shot 115-66. Goalkeeper Patricia Koutoulas has started all seven games and has a .760 save percentage against 50 shots on goal.
Miami interim head coach Hugh Seyfarth had been an assistant with the RedHawks for the previous four seasons. Prior to his most recent stint at Miami, he was head coach at Florida Southern for eight seasons. In 2016, Miami was 8-9-2 (5-4-2 MAC).
PROMOTIONS (VS. BALL STATE)
LAST WEEK
Bowling Green concluded its non-conference schedule with a 2-1 victory over the Robert Morris Colonials on Friday, Sept. 15 at Cochrane Stadium. Erica Hubert gave BGSU the lead in the 26th minute off a pass from Kristin Tveit, then Skylar Fleak posted her sixth goal of the season and sixth career game-winning goal just 35 seconds after halftime. The Falcons permitted a goal one minute after Fleak's score but did not allow a shot over the remaining 43 minutes of the match. The Falcons' 5-2-0 start is the team's best through seven games since 1999 and the team's best non-conference record since 2001.
FALCONS VS THE MAC
The Falcons enter their 21st season of MAC play in 2018. They are a two-time MAC Tournament champion (2004, 2005) and won the regular season title in 2005. They have reached the tournament championship on three other occasions (2000, 2003 and 2007). The team's initial MAC win this season will be the 75th in program history. Matt Fannon's squad will seek BGSU's first winning conference record and MAC Tournament berth since 2008. The Falcons have finished fourth in the East with three MAC wins in each of the last three seasons.
GETTING OFF TO A GOOD START
This will be the third straight season that BGSU begins MAC play with a pair of home games. Last year, they split matches with Ohio and Kent State on opening weekend. Overall, BGSU is 9-9-2 in MAC openers and 7-11-2 in their first MAC home game. They have swept their opening two MAC home games four times (2005, '06, '08, '10).
FANTASTIC FLEAKÂ
Senior forward Skylar Fleak (Sunbury, Ohio) continues to be a critical asset in the MAC's best scoring offense (2.14 goals/game). Last Friday, she scored 35 seconds into the second half to provide the winning margin in BGSU's 2-1 win over Robert Morris. It was her sixth goal of the season and second game-winning score. She has equaled her previous season high for goals and moves her career total to 22, which is third in BGSU history. For game-winning goals, Fleak now has six in her career, which ranks second among active Falcons and fifth-most in school history.Â
Fleak is already a two-time MAC Offensive Player of the Week in 2017 and, in just seven games, has eclipsed her previous season best for points in a season with 15. She has moved into fifth place on BGSU's all-time list with 52 career points.
FLEAK'S FOUR GOALS VS OAKLAND
#1: 8:57 (1) -- Shot from 5 yards out, went through keeper's hands (Kennedy assist)
#2: 12:19 (1) -- Shot from 10 yards out following turnover (Swindell assist)
#3: 47:07 (2) -- Shot from 6 yards out, beat three defenders (Swindell assist)
#4: 65:50 (2) -- Shot from 10 yards out following corner kick (Schupbach assist)
OFFENSE ON THE PROWL
There's no question that BGSU has ramped up their aggression on offense in 2017. The Falcons have had more shots than their opponents in six of seven games this year and more shots on goal in five of the seven. For the season as a whole, they've outshot their opponents by nearly a 2:1 margin (118-66). Through one-third of the schedule, BGSU is on pace for its most shots (303) and goals (38) since 2004, its fewest-ever shots allowed (170), and its fewest goals allowed since 2008 (18).
HOORAY FOR HUBERT
Redshirt junior Erica Hubert launched a barrage of shots at Robert Morris goalkeeper Sydney bruckner on Friday night in BGSU's 2-1 win over the Colonials. Her nine attempts were a season high, and she scored her third goal of the season from the right side of the box in the 26th minute. That score gave the Falcons a lead they would not give up. Hubert is now tied with Michelle Lisy for eighth in BGSU history with 18 career goals. She currently leads the 2017 Falcons in shots (30) and shots on goal (15).
SENIOR LEADERSHIP
Defenders rarely get scoring opportunities, so when those arrive, it's special. Senior Rachel Winters scored against Chicago State less than a month into her BGSU career in 2014 but did not even get a shot during her sophomore and junior seasons. Two games into her final campaign with the Falcons, Winters earned two shots (both on goal) against Morehead State. She buried oen in the net in the 55th minute for the first game-winning goal of her career. Winters only had to wait two weeks for another chance. On Senior Day against Wright State, she scored her second goal (and game-winner) of 2017 off a set piece in the 22nd minute during BGSU's 2-0 win.
A KENNEDY SPECIALTY
Maureen Kennedy's penalty kick goal against Michigan State was the Falcons' 21st all-time in 24 attempts (..875), while opponents have scored on only 16 of 29 (.552) penalty kick chances. Kennedy, a sophomore defender from Cypress, Calif., now has three goals from penalty kicks in just 21 career games. Those account for 60 percent of her five career goals. She is tied for second-most in BGSU history and needs one to tie the co-record holders Beth Wechsler (78 matches played) and Colleen Kordan (83 MP). In addition to her PK goal, Kennedy has four assists in 2017. She leads the MAC in that category and is second on the team with six points. She has at least one point in four straight matches.Â
