BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team capped its 2017 non-conference season with a 2-1 victory over Robert Morris University on Friday evening (Sept. 15). Over 400 fans at Cochrane Stadium witnessed senior Skylar Fleak score her sixth career game-winning goal just seconds into the second half, then held their breath as the Falcons hled on to a single-goal lead over a frantic final 43 minutes.
Fleak and Erica Hubert tallied BGSU's two goals. Hubert constantly threatened goalkeeper Sydney Bruckner and took nine shots. One of those found the net. In the 26th minute, Sophia Barnes played Kristin Tveit into the box. Tveit found Hubert with a pass, and Hubert scored from five yards out on the right. Barnes' point was the first of her career, while Tveit earned an assist for the second straight game.Â
Fleak was also very active in BGSU's offensive third, but she was limited to one serious scoring opportunity. Of course, she took advantage. Immediately after halftime, the Falcons worked the ball towards the RMU goal. Maureen Kennedy sent a fantastic cross through the box, and Fleak beat Bruckner for a 2-0 lead just 35 seconds past the half. However, a defensive breakdown one minute later resulted in a goal by the Colonials' Kristina Kelley, which halved their deficit. Bowling Green was able to limit RMU to no further shots on goal, and the Falcons finished with the 2-1 edge.
POSTGAME NOTES
Skylar Fleak has had a season-long stranglehold on the MAC lead in goals and points, and that continued on Friday night. Fleak scored her sixth goal of the season and increased her point total to 15. She has now equaled her previous high for goals in one season and has set a new personal standard for points in a season. Her 22nd career goal inches her closer to Samantha Meister (28) for second place on BGSU's all-time list, and she moves into fifth place for career points (52). Fleak's heroics have resulted in two MAC Offensive Player of the Week awards in just four weeks of the 2017 season. She has at least one point in all five of BGSU's wins.
BGSU's victory gave the team a 5-2-0 record through the first seven games of their 2017 season. That equals the 1999 squad for the best seven-game start in team history.. The 2017 Falcons have a chance to become the first team in program history to win six of their first eight games when they host Ball State next Friday night. In addition, the team finished the non-conference season with that same 5-2-0 mark. Only the 2001 Falcons (5-1-1) finished with a better record outside of the MAC.
Maureen Kennedy assumed the team lead with her fourth assist of the season when she helped Fleak score in the opening minute of the second half. She has a point in four consecutive games, and that is tied for the third-longest streak in Falcon history. The sophomore defender from Cypress, Calif. already has five goals and eight assists in just 26 career games. Five of those eight assists have been game-winners.
