BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Over the next five weeks, BGSUFalcons.com will be taking a closer look at each of the five men's basketball signees. The "Future Falcon Friday" series will be posted each Friday, and will delve into each of the five future Falcons. All five signees will be freshmen on the 2017-18 team.
In the first edition of the series, Future Falcon Friday will focus on Nelly Cummings. Cummings is a 6-0 guard from Midland, Pennsylvania, and a soon-to-be graduate of Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School. Cummings is a 3-star prospect according to ESPN Recruiting. Heading into this recruiting period, BGSU had never signed an ESPN Recruiting 3-star prospect.
To say that Cummings was highly recruited would be an understatement. According to Verbal Commits, Cummings had offers from Temple, High Point, Robert Morris, St. Francis (PA), Mount St. Mary's, Cornell, NJIT, Brown, Dartmouth, Furman, Quinnipiac, and Bucknell.
"Nelly had a terrific high school career, and will thrive in our system here at Bowling Green. His ability to score the ball, control a game and make his teammates better is what made him a highly-recruited basketball player," said head coach Michael Huger. "What most people don't realize is that Nelly is just as good of a student as he is basketball player. Among many others, he had offers from all the Ivy and Patriot League schools. He is a special young man.
"When people talk about Nelly Cummings, they're talking about the complete package, incredible person, terrific student, talented basketball player and tireless worker. That's the kind of young men my staff and I want at Bowling Green."
Lincoln Park is a part of the decorated WPIAL conference. He finished his career with 2,411 points, which ranks him fifth all-time on the WPIAL's all-time scoring list. Cummings scored 37 points in his final game to move into the top five, surpassing T.J. McConnell, who now plays for the Philadelphia 76ers. Throughout the season, he also passed up Terrelle Pryor (NFL wide receiver) and Don Hennon (All-American at Pittsburgh).
Cummings averaged 29.0 points and 4.5 assists this season, as he led Lincoln Park all the way to the PIAA Class 3A title game. The trip to the finals marked Cumming's second at Lincoln Park, as the Leopards went 30-1 and won the state title in Cumming's freshman season. Cummings is Beaver County's all-time leading scorer. Cummings won 103 games at Lincoln Park.
Cummings, who shot 85 percent from the free throw line in 2016-17, earned First Team All-State honors this season, and was named the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Player of the Year, which also landed him a spot on the Post-Gazette's Fab Five team for the second-straight year.
Nelly led his Lincoln Park Leopards to at least the state quarterfinals in all four of his seasons. He's a three-time All-State selection, a three-time First Team All-WPIAL selection, as well as a three-time captain, and a National Honors Society member.
Cummings averaged 24.5 points and 4.2 assists as a sophomore, and 23.3 points and 5.6 assists as a junior. Cummings, who had a number of scoring outbursts across his career, poured in a career-high 50 points on Senior Night this season.
Cummings joins fellow signees Joniya Gadson (Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / Dillard High School), Derek Koch (West Salem, Ohio / Northwestern High School), Matiss Kulackovskis (Saldus, Latvia / Archbishop Ryan High School) and Daeqwon Plowden (Philadelphia, Pa. / Mastery Charter North School).
