April 12, 2017 | Men's Basketball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball program and head coach Michael Huger announced the signing of Matiss Kulackovskis to a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday (April 12) afternoon. Kulackovskis, a 6-foot-8, 210-pound forward from Saldus, Latvia, will enter the program and have four years of eligibility, beginning with the 2017-18 season. Kulackovskis spent his final two seasons of high school at Archbishop Ryan High School in Philadelphia.
Kulackovskis joins an incoming class of Nelly Cummings (Midland, Pa. / Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School), Joniya Gadson (Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / Dillard High School), Derek Koch (West Salem, Ohio / Northwestern High School) and Daeqwon Plowden (Philadelphia, Pa. / Mastery Charter North School), who all signed during the early signing period in November.
"I would like to welcome Matiss Kulackovskis to the Bowling Green family," said head coach Michael Huger. "Matiss is a highly-talented stretch forward who can score on all levels. At 6-foot-8, his offensive versatility and ability to guard multiple positions makes him a unique and special player. Our fans will love his soft, feathery stroke from the perimeter, ability to take his man off the dribble, and his skilled interior post game.
"Originally from Latvia, Matiss spent the past two years dominating the Philadelphia Catholic League at Archbishop Ryan. When my staff and I saw him play, we knew we were recruiting a young man who is a perfect fit for our offense."
This past season, while serving as a team captain, the Latvian averaged 18.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists for the Raiders. He also shot an impressive 40 percent from three-point range as a senior, while shooting 55 percent from the floor overall. In Kulackovskis' two seasons at Archbishop Ryan, the Raiders won 39 games, made two appearances in the Philadelphia Catholic League (PCL) semifinals, which are staged at the famous Palestra, while also making a run this past season to the PIAA Class 6A state semifinals.
"When we recruit potential student-athletes, we not only look for great basketball players, but also high-character young men," continued Huger. "Matiss is a proven winner on and off the basketball court, and he will represent BGSU in a first-class manner. I couldn't be more excited to have this young man wearing Orange and Brown for the next four years, and there is no doubt he will be a Falcon fan favorite!"
Kulackovskis was named First Team All-PCL in 2016-17, and earned Second Team All-City honors, on top of being named to the All-Southeastern Pennsylvania Third Team. Archbishop Ryan finished the season with a 23-6 mark this season. In Kulackovskis' first season at Archbishop Ryan, the Raiders went 16-8.
