NOTE OF THE DAY
Senior Ashley Tunstall had the finest game of her BGSU career on Wednesday night (Jan. 4) vs. Northern Illinois. Tunstall, in her second season with the Falcons, set career-high totals in nearly every category, including points (17), rebounds (12) and assists (four). The double-double was her first as a Falcon, and she also set BG career bests in field goals made and free throws made.
Tunstall averaged 3.6 points per game prior to the Christmas holiday, but the forward has scored 12.7 ppg in the three games since then. She also has 8.7 rebounds per contest in that time, after averaging 4.6 boards per game before Christmas. Over that three-game span, Tunstall has increased her seasonal scoring average from 3.6 ppg to 5.7 ppg, and her rebounds-per-game average has gone from 4.6 to 5.5.
A TRADITION OF SUCCESS
Bowling Green has won 14 MAC regular-season championships and 11 league tournament titles, the highest totals among all conference teams. Prior to the injury-plagued season of 2014-15, the Falcons had won at least 20 games in a MAC-record 11 consecutive seasons. BG won at least 24 games in nine-straight seasons during that span, losing just 18 total games in MAC regular-season play during those nine years.
The Falcons made 10 consecutive national postseason trips from 2005-14, with five NCAA Championships appearances and five trips to the WNIT during that time. The 2006-07 team was the most successful in MAC history, winning a league-record 31 games en route to an NCAA 'Sweet Sixteen' appearance.
Overall, BGSU has won 20 or more games 19 times, the highest total among all Mid-American Conference women's basketball-playing institutions.
SCOUTING AKRON
Akron enters Saturday's game with an overall record of 7-6, and the Zips are 0-2 in the MAC after an 89-62 loss at Central Michigan on Wednesday night. UA's other MAC game also came on the road, a 73-60 setback vs. Western Michigan last weekend. The Zips are 2-2 at home, 5-3 on the road and 0-1 in neutral-site games this year to date. Senior guard Hannah Plybon leads the team with 19.1 points per game, and she has hit a team-high 38 three-point field goals. Senior guard Alex Ricketts and redshirt sophomore guard Megan Sefcik have scored 10.4 and 9.8 ppg, respectively, with Sefcik connecting 33 times from long range. Junior forward Greta Burry leads the team in rebounding, with 5.3 boards per outing, while freshman guard Shaunay Edmonds has team-best averages of 3.4 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Head coach Jodi Kest and the Zips finished 19-14 overall and 11-7 in MAC play a year ago.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Akron, 51-7, in the all-time series, but the Zips have won four meetings in a row after winning just three of the first 54 matchups between the teams. Last year, UA posted a 71-55 win at the Stroh Center (Jan. 13, 2016) and a 71-61 victory in the regular-season finale' at Rhodes Arena (March 5, 2016). BGSU's last win over Akron was a 77-76 decision on the last day of the 2013-14 regular season (March 8, 2014), as Jillian Halfhill's layup with 6.6 seconds remaining gave the Falcons the win and the outright MAC title. BG won the first 26 series meetings with the Zips, saw Akron capture two of the next five games, then won 19 more in a row before a UA win in January of 2013. BGSU is 27-2 in home games, 22-5 in road contests and 2-0 in neutral-site meetings with the Zips over the years. Jennifer Roos is 3-5 against Akron as a collegiate head coach.
UP NEXT
Following the Akron game, the Falcons hit the road once again for a midweek matchup in Kalamazoo. BG will meet Western Michigan on Wednesday (Jan. 11), before returning home for the following three contests, beginning Saturday, Jan. 14, against Central Michigan. That CMU game, the second half of a Falcon hoops doubleheader at the Stroh Center, is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
