Celebrating 50 Years Of The Doyt
The Bowling Green Falcons defeated the Dayton Flyers in the first game at their brand-new stadium on Oct. 1, 1966. The 13-0 victory righted the ship following a season-opening loss to Tampa and began a half-century of winning football tradition.
Â
BGSU's offense struggled to find its way for much of the game, but the defense did not. Falcon defenders permitted just 131 yards and earned three takeaways, as BGSU shut out the Flyers for the fourth consecutive time. Overall, it was the team's ninth straight win over Dayton.
Â
In the first half, Bowling Green committed multiple turnovers, while Dayton's offense provided the only scoring opportunity. The Flyers drove to BGSU's one-yard line in the second quarter, but the Falcons stopped fullback Marty Coates on a fourth-down play to prevent a score.
Â
BGSU took advantage of a short Dayton punt into the wind in the third quarter. The Falcons took over at the Dayton 48 and marched for the game's first score. Stew Williams and Mike Weger combined for the first 47 yards, then quarterback Russ Jacques dove on fourth down for the final yard and a 7-0 lead.
Â
The score remained 7-0 until the final second of the game, when Weger ran around right end from one yard out for a touchdown and a 13-0 victory.
Â
Williams finished the game as BGSU's leading offensive weapon with 29 carries and 139 yards. Weger added 63 yards on 16 attempts.
Â
The Falcons finished the season, the second of Bob Gibson's tenure, with a 6-3 record. Including that game, BGSU has won 162 of 253 games at Doyt Perry Stadium and has a winning home record in 31 of the 50 seasons.
