Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University football team completed its annual spring game Saturday at Perry Field House. The game was conducted as an open scrimmage with several hundred fans and former players packed into the facility.
The offense squared off against the defense with quarterbacks James Knapke and James Morgan alternating series until the final drive, which was led by Mike Messina. On each turn, the offense was given three plays to generate first downs until they scored or turned the ball over on downs.
Knapke led his offense to two touchdowns in his four opportunities. On his second drive, he connected with a short slant pass to Robbie Rhodes, who turned inside and ran untouched up the middle for a score. On his final possession, Matt Domer took a handoff and found his way into the end zone.
Morgan's offense secured a first down on his final drive but otherwise did not score. Marcus Milton intercepted a Morgan pass on the second series for the only turnover of the scrimmage.
The Falcon defense performed very well overall, as they held the offenses to three-and-out on five of the nine possessions. They pursued and tackled well against the run, while the defensive backs did not permit any of the quarterbacks to complete any of several deep passes.
In total, the offense ran approximately 35 plays.
After the offense versus defense portion of the scrimmage, the Falcons worked on special teams with both the punt and field goal unit spending time on the field.
First-year head coach Mike Jinks, his staff and the players held a meet-and-greet with fans in attendance following the completion of the scrimmage.
BGSU football will open the season Sept. 3 at Ohio State. The Falcons will play non-conference home games against North Dakota and Middle Tennessee State before the team's eight-game MAC schedule. Fans can purchase season tickets for the defending MAC Champions by CLICKING HERE.
