NOTE OF THE DAY
BGSU, despite being at a height disadvantage in many of this year's 11 games, has won the battle of the boards nine times, with at least seven more rebounds than the opponent on six occasions. The Falcons have a +6.5 rebounding margin – good for second in the MAC – heading into the Malone game.
In games against teams NOT from the state of Virginia, the Falcons have yet to be out-rebounded. BG has a +9.1 rebounding margin in those nine contests.
A TRADITION OF SUCCESS
Bowling Green has won 14 MAC regular-season championships and 11 league tournament titles, the highest totals among all conference teams. Prior to the injury-plagued season of 2014-15, the Falcons had won at least 20 games in a MAC-record 11 consecutive seasons. BG won at least 24 games in nine-straight seasons during that span, losing just 18 total games in MAC regular-season play during those nine years.
The Falcons made 10 consecutive national postseason trips from 2005-14, with five NCAA Championships appearances and five trips to the WNIT during that time. The 2006-07 team was the most successful in MAC history, winning a league-record 31 games en route to an NCAA 'Sweet Sixteen' appearance.
Overall, BGSU has won 20 or more games 19 times, the highest total among all Mid-American Conference women's basketball-playing institutions.
SCOUTING MALONE
Malone enters Wednesday night's game with a 6-4 record, and the Pioneers have won three-straight games. Most recently, Malone went on the road and won a pair of games on back-to-back days, with a 79-73 win at Caldwell and an 86-42 annihilation of Nyack. The latter game came on Dec. 17. The Pioneers are led by a pair of transfers from the MAC's Miami University. One of the two, senior Hannah McCue, leads the team in scoring and rebounding, with 14.4 points and 9.8 boards per game. The other, senior Rachel Goddard, was named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week after scoring 47 points in the team's two wins. She is averaging 14.2 ppg, 4.3 rpg and 5.2 assists per contest. Junior Baylen Dyrlund is also scoring in double figures, with 12.1 ppg for first-year head coach Rick Tice. The Pioneers are averaging 9.2 three-point field goals per game this year to date.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Malone, 1-0, in the all-time series between the teams. The lone previous meeting came over three-and-a-half decades ago, as BGSU picked up a 63-58 home win over the Pioneers in December of 1980.
UP NEXT
Following the Malone game, the Falcons will continue a season-long four-game home swing by facing Ohio University in the Mid-American Conference opener on New Year's Eve (Dec. 31). Saturday's game will begin at noon at the Stroh Center. Then, the Brown and Orange will host Northern Illinois (Jan. 4) before beginning the road portion of the MAC schedule at Akron (Jan. 7).
