BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – In thrilling fashion, team Orange won Game 2 of the Bowling Green State University baseball Orange and Brown World Series Friday afternoon at Warren E. Steller Field. Orange won the ballgame, 3-2, to take a 2-0 series lead in the best-of-five World Series. The two squads played six innings of baseball.
Redshirt-sophomore Rob Zenas picked up the win for team Orange, pitching the final 2.2 innings of the contest. He relieved redshirt-junior C.J. Schildt, who allowed one run over 3.1 innings of work.
Orange led, 3-1, heading into the bottom of the sixth, but Brown did not go down without a fight. After freshman Blake Jenkins drew a leadoff walk and redshirt-junior Nick Glanzman notched a single through the left side, senior Matt Smith smoked an RBI single into centerfield to pull the game within a single run at 3-2.
With runners at first and third and no outs, sophomore Randy Righter rolled a ground ball to sophomore Cody Callaway at shortstop. In a bang-bang play, Callaway fired home to junior Dan Ferguson, who applied the tag on Glanzman for the first out of the frame. Zenas then induced a 6-4-3 game-ending double play to secure the victory for team Orange.
Team Orange plated two runs in the top of the fifth to break a 1-1 tie. After a Callaway leadoff walk, Ferguson shot an RBI triple off the right-field wall. Sophomore Derek Drewes then squeezed home Ferguson with a bunt, staking team Orange to a 3-1 lead.
Zenas went on to work a 1-2-3 fifth for Orange, while junior Tony Landi worked a perfect sixth for team Brown to give the home team a chance.
Redshirt-freshman Zach Kendall got the start for the Brown squad, and he threw four innings of one-run ball. In the second, after Ferguson started a two-out rally with a single, Kendall stranded a pair. And in the fourth, after junior Greg Basalyga worked a leadoff walk and stole second with no outs, Kendall left Basalyga in scoring position by recording three straight outs. Kendall threw a perfect third, fanning two in the process.
Kendall's lone run surrendered came in the first, when freshman Riley Minorik – who registered a double in the frame – came around to score on a Basalyga RBI groundout.
Schildt was equally as good for team Orange. The southpaw worked a perfect first, and allowed just a Righter leadoff single in the second. Freshman Mitchell Schneider reached base with a leadoff walk in the third, but Schildt left him at second by inducing a lineout to center field to end the threat.
Team Brown would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. After a Smith one-out single and a Righter double down the left-field line, Schildt ended his day by walking sophomore Justin Mott to load the bases. Freshman Brad Croy lifted a sacrifice fly to right field off Zenas, scoring Smith to knot the game at 1-1.
Team Orange will look to close out the series in Game 3, which will take place Sunday, Oct. 18 at noon. Fans can view a photo gallery from Game 2 by clicking the above link. The series schedule, with a link to the Game 1 recap, can be found below.
