BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team opened its annual Orange and Brown World Series Thursday afternoon at Warren E. Steller Field. The Orange team claimed Game 1 of the best-of-five series by a score of 11-1. Team Orange – the home team for the ballgame, plated a run in every frame – using a five-run second to pull away. The two squads played six innings.
Senior Devin Daugherty got the start for volunteer assistant coach Jeremy Shay's Brown squad, pitching into the second inning, while sophomore Zac Carey started for assistant coach Ryan Shay's Orange team.
Team Brown got on the board first, as sophomore Randy Righter lifted a sacrifice fly into left field. Junior Addison Rospert – who notched two hits in the contest – led off the game with a single, and later scored on the Righter sacrifice fly.
A pair of freshmen got the offense rolling for team Orange in the bottom half of the inning. Riley Minorik ripped a triple to center field, before R.J. Williams hit a two-run home run to right field.
Freshman Chase Antle worked a scoreless inning for team Orange in the second, setting up the team's five-run frame. Junior Dan Ferguson led off the inning with a double. Freshman Cam Daugherty then hit a two-run home run to right off his brother.
Minorik would go on to record his second hit of the ballgame, and after a Williams walk, junior Greg Basalyga dropped a double into center field that scored the two freshmen. Sophomore Hunter Clanin wrapped up the scoring for the inning with a two-out double, pushing the Orange's lead to 7-1.
Cam Daugherty picked up his third RBI of Game 1 in the third – after junior Trevor Farrell tossed a scoreless top half – with a single. Ferguson came around to score when sophomore Derek Drewes grounded out to first. And after three innings, Orange led, 9-1.
In the top half of the fourth, redshirt-junior Nick Glanzman and Righter registered base hits for team Brown. But redshirt-sophomore Tyler Anderson came on in relief and stranded the runners at the corners.
Team Orange then pushed its lead to 10-1 in the bottom of the fourth, when sophomore Cody Callaway poked a triple down the right-field line. Sophomore Kody Brown limited the damage, however, coming in from out of the pen to strand Callaway at third.
Anderson went on to toss a scoreless fifth, working around a team Brown single from freshman Joe McGuinness. Team Orange tacked on one more run in the bottom half of the fifth, as Williams recorded a two-out single that scored Drewes. Redshirt-freshman Axel Bueter tossed a scoreless sixth to secure the victory for the Orange squad.
