Falcons Are Perfect on Friday

Oct. 10, 2008

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team enjoyed a successful Friday (Oct. 10), to say the least, at the Fall Mid-American Conference Invitational. Falcon competitors combined to go a perfect 9-0 in day-one action at the invite, which is being hosted by Western Michigan.

All nine MAC schools that sponsor women's tennis are represented at the tournament. No team scores are kept.

Each of the Falcons' six singles entrants won in straight sets Friday. At the top flight, sophomore Christine Chiricosta lost only one game en route to a sweep of Martina Schnapp of Northern Illinois.

Senior Kelsey Jakupcin swept Eastern Michigan's Karina Ahuja in flight two, while junior Samantha Kintzel was a winner over Akron's Carolina Castro Cota in third-flight action.

At the fourth flight, junior Katia Babina was victorious over an Akron opponent as well, topping the Zips' Kerry Langworthy. Senior Stefanie Menoff dropped only four games in her sweep of Ball State's Rachel Surowiec at the sixth flight, while senior Libby Harrison did not lose a single game in her win (6-0, 6-0) over the Cardinals' Kristin McKinney.

It was more of the same in doubles play. Chiricosta teamed with Jakupcin for an 8-0 win over a Northern Illinois team at the top flight, while the junior tandem of Babina/Kintzel posted an 8-2 outcome over another NIU duo. At the third flight, Harrison and Menoff were winners over an Eastern Michigan team by a score of 8-6.

The Fall MAC Invitational continues Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 11-12) at Sorenson Courts in Kalamazoo.
